The Morgue and Me has been nominated for the Missouri Gateway Reader's Award for 2011. So far, it is my favorite of the nominees. It started a little slow, but really got to moving about a quarter of the way in. It is a murder mystery with a couple of twists I never saw coming. Really enjoyed this one.

Volume 3 of The Worlds of Star Trek was not nearly as good as the first two. I did not find the story of Quark on Ferenginar all that interesting, nor was the one about The Dominion. The only part was the section with Taran'atar because it tied into the beginning of Warpath, which was actually a continuing story after The Dominion. Had I realized that I would have waited to read Warpath, since I kept thinking I had missed something when it started out with Kira and Ro mortally wounded right at the beginning.

By:James Howe total pages:288 Misfits by James Howe is about a group of middle school students who are best friends who have been teased by many people over the years. the main characters in this story are Addie, Bobby, Joe, Skeezy. Bobby used to be picked on because he is over weight Addie was teased because of her height and because she was very shy. Skeezy was teased because he dresses differently then most other people do. Joe was always teased because he is gay. These students found each other at school and then called each other misfits because they never fit in with the "in crowd." They all decide to run in the upcoming school election and try and beat the other students by being the best candidate and winning other peoples votes. In the end they don't end up winning the election but they all gained more self confidence. They also gave a speech at school about how bullying and name calling is a bad thing and they each spoke of their own experiences with name calling. This book teaches readers that it doesn't matter what someone looks like or how they dress or who they choose to date it matters about who the person inside of them is. These kids were very good people but no one took a chance to get to know them because of what they saw on the outside. This is like saying don't judge a book by it's cover because you never know what kind of a person someone is until you really get to know them. Bullying and teasing kids doesn't make them feel good it just lowers their self esteem and lowers their self confidence. At the end of this book the kids have more confidence then when they started because they spoke about what had hurt them in the past and told people how it made them feel.

Scientifically it is impossible to prove a negative so Ben Goldacre, an epidiemiologist, has gone about proof by exclusion. In this brilliat book on what is bad about pseudo-scientific claims he makes the case for good science by outlining what is necessary for anyone to make the claim that what has happened is significant. He communicates brilliantly, without becoming overzealous or fundamentalist, and anybody who reads this should then be able to laugh at advertising claims as much as I do. We are fooled enough by the real white-coat wearers, be they scientists or doctors. We should not be fooled by everyone else who aspires to scientific credentials because they have a picture of themselves wearing a whit-coat to a fancy dress party when they were twelve.

This book gave me refreshing insight on the importance of humility in the life of a Christian. Murray explained how the incarnation, life, death on the cross, and resurrection of Jesus were all examples of the fulfillment of Christ's humility. He continued to assert that humility is the root of all of the other virtues of a Christian's life. With out humility it is impossible to display love, joy, peace, patience, and all of the other fruits of the Holy Spirit. I learned how important, basic, beautiful, and life changing the understanding and application of humility is to the life of a born again Christian. Humility is so often times overlooked by believers and difficult to practice because it is the act of forgetting oneself and becoming a servant of all.

"On an otherwise unremarkable September morning, long before I learned to be ashamed of my mother, she takes my hand and we set off down New Jersey Avenue to begin my very first day of school." So begins The First Day, one of the fourteen character driven short stories drawn from Edward P. Jones' award winning book, "Lost in the City." It is the story of an illiterate mother who sacrifices pride and seeks help from a stranger in order to get her young daughter enrolled in school and it is also the story of an awareness beginning to grow in a young girl as she first takes notice of her mother's flaws. Spare, poignant writing that will linger long after you turn the last page. This is the case with many of the stories in the collection. The setting is the inner city of Washington D.C. and the characters, which range from church attending gospel singers to the mother of a crack dealer and everything in between, are the families and community struggling day-to-day to survive the hardships surrounding them and occasionally, in their own unique ways, to triumph.

I am and will always be a girl in love with horses, and I loved this book. It is one of my all-time favorites. Any book where the hero is a horse is a good book to me!

I was wholly unable to relate to her in this book. She just went around feeling sorry for herself for not fitting in and not having money and not knowing how to socialize and idealizing the American college experience today. I could see a lot of relation to GWU on the college campus, but it felt like what it was: A journalist trying to do a survey of American college life through the eyes of a poor student who had never been introduced to socialization... BORING! I WENT TO COLLEGE LIVED THE EXPERIENCE AND DONT NEED TO READ ABOUT IT.

Book 2 of this, my favorite youth detective series. It is somewhat a continuation of book 1, and while a little unbelievable, it's a very fun, quick read. Certainly a light read for enjoyment. August 2013 ... just re-read, and just as good as ever. One of my favorites, though a bit far-fetched in some ways. Lots of good fun, delightful skills of deduction, and characters that I've come to love over the years.

This book clears up everything that seemed missing from the second book and ties it to the first book. I find the series to be very odd. And I'm not sure if that's good.
