I read the first story on the subway ride home tonight and it bothered me. Returned it, it just didn't grab me.

Paranoid and delusional crap. I used to read stuff like this for fun, but now it just pisses me off.

I would really give this book 3.5 stars. I was initially disappointed with the slow pacing of the story. I should have known that it would only be a matter of time before I was sucked back into Olamina's story. Octavia Butler did not let me down. This is a story of the efforts of Lauren Oya Olamina to jumpstart her Earthseed belief system during the dystopian chaos of America in 2032. At this time, America is no longer the shining city on a hill. Alaska has seceded from the union, American currency is worthless and slavery, disease, and violence are widespread. Out of desperation, citizens have elected Texas Senator Andrew Steele Jarret as the new President of the United States of America. Jarret also just happens to be the head of the Church of Christian America. Jarret and his supporters are going to fix things.....even if it means burning people at the stake who refuse to fall in line. Join us and thrive, or whatever happens to you as a result of your own sinful stubborness is your problem. The clash between Earthseed and Christian America is inevitable. The consequences are tragic. I had a hard time putting this book down.

This book was excellent. As genetic engineering and embryo selection are becoming more commonplace, My Sister's Keeper explores the ethical implications of such practices. Anna, chosen as an embryo to be a bone marrow match for her cancer sticken older sister Kate, is being coerced by her parents to donate an organ to Kate. She decides that twelve years of essentially being used for spare parts to prolong her sister's life is enough and sues her parents to be allowed to make her own medical decisions. The book follows Anna and her family through the process as she attempts to choose between continually saving her sister's life or being able to live her own without the repeated painful medical procedures. It is a provocative look at what could happen with the power that we now posses in the scientific realm. Is is ethical to create one child to save another? Is it ethical to force a perfectly healthy child to undergo numerous procedures to prolong another's life? And where do you draw the line once you've started down this road? I was sobbing so hard by the end of the book that my parents thought something had happened to me. It is definitely worth a read.
