Dr. Annick Swenson is working in the Brazilian jungle on a drug that could change the lives of women beyond imagination. She is a difficult woman to deal with though and refuses to communicate with the pharmaceutical company financing her research, doesn’t share any of her findings and stays silent about any progress she might be making. Frustrated, the company sends out one of its researchers, Anders Eckman, to find doctor Swenson and get answers from her. Months later a short, uninformative letter reports that Eckman has died of a fever and has been buried. Marina Singh was Eckman’s colleague and used to be a student of Dr. Swenson. Both the pharmaceutical company and Eckman’s wife are leaning on her to go to Brazil and find answers for them. The company still wants to know about the research they’re funding while the wife needs answers about her husbands death and funeral. Reluctantly Marina, who is fighting her own demons, starts what will turn out to be a long journey, first to find her way to Dr. Swenson and then to find the answers her need. But once she finds herself in the jungle things start changing for Marina. Her loyalties shift, her priorities change and if she does make it out of in the jungle in one piece she will be a different woman. This is a fascinating book. I was intrigued by the characters and what they were facing from the very first page. Ann Patchett has a way with words that pushes me forward through the story. At several times I found myself torn between wanting to rush along in order to find out what was going to happen, where the story was leading, and wanting to take it slow so that I could give the wonderful words, sentences and constructions all the attention they deserved. All sorts of questions are raised in this book; questions about motivation, about the rights and wrongs in living with and interfering in a different, less advanced community. We’re left wondering about obsession and whether the end always justifies the means. This story and the issues it raises will stay for a long time, and I can see myself reading it again at some point in the future because I feel that in the end I did read it faster than I should have.

Eğlenceli Puzzle: Meslekler Büyük Boy 36 Parça TrendKitaplar Kütüphanesi

Tarafından yazılmış kitap Tarafından: Gizzy Group

Anna Oliphant is starting her senior year in high school. She should be extatic, but she's not; her father has enrolled her in a French boarding school for American students. She's leaving behind her best friend, Bridgette, and her latest crush, Toph, the cute guy at work who she finally kissed the night before she left for Paris. She's alone and doesn't know anyone, doesn't speak French, and just wants to go home to Atlanta. She does make friends, of course, and even while she's pining for Toph, she develops a crush on Etienne St. Clair, one of the guys in her group of friends. She thinks he might feel the same, but St. Clair has a girlfriend; she graduated last year and attends a local Parisian college. It shouldn't be complicated, right? But it sooo is... My thoughts: It's ALWAYS the books that I put off reading that I end up adoring. Anna and the French Kiss is like hot chocolate (chocolat chaud) on a cold winter day: It warmed my heart, made me smile, and I didn't want to put it down. Sophie Perkins has written a wonderful story about a teenage girl who's learning that although things change, they're not always bad. Her cast of characters are well-rounded and each of them brings something special to the story. Besides the witty writing and sweet story line, though, I think what I liked best is that Anna is a character that I can relate to. I remember those feelings of insecurity and just feeling so...awkward. Her fears about being an American in France are comically endearing. I also swooned with Anna over St. Clair, he was so charming and sweet had his own problems to deal with. As you probably guessed from the title, Anna and the French Kiss is set in Paris, and Ms. Perkins does a wonderful job of highlighting all the parts of Paris I hope to one day see for myself. There were several scenes that took place in the city, notably a very sweet scene when St. Clair takes Anna on a brief tour of the city to assuage her fear of leaving the school's campus. In case I haven't made it clear yet, I absolutely recommend Anna and the French Kiss; it's definitely going on my Keeper Shelf. I plan to read more books by Ms. Perkins, starting with the next book in this series, Lola and the Boy Next Door, on shelves September 29.
