I read this book in one weekend while I was traveling to and from the Orkney Islands. It was a massive book; much longer than any I have read in a while. I loved the story and the main character, Kassandra. It was very interesting to see the Trojan War through her eyes, one of the very minor characters in Homer's epic. Instead of making Kassandra a meek princess, she was a headstrong and independent woman who trained with the Amazons for a year. The story was tragic because I knew that the fall of Troy was inevitable and that so-and-so would be dead by the end of the book. Yet, it was Kassandra's story and it was told vividly and beautifully. There was tragedy and a lot of it before the book ended, but it ended on a positive and hopeful note.

A fascinating look at an era and generation. I read this book over a year ago and find it still haunts me. We visited Cap d"Antibes last May, where Sara and Gerald established their Riviera home. What a thrill it was to walk along the Garoupe Beach - which they had discovered - trying to envision what it must once have been like before the Murphys helped to popularize the area. Now, of course, it's thick with tourists. But the imagination can take flight!

I totally forgot I read this book 5 years ago. I just reread it (Dec 31 2012). I thoroughly enjoyed it. But as I look through the comments I see it is not a true memoir. It is unfortunate, I was so wrapped up in the story and believing all the details that I feel in love with this book. I am sure certain aspects are true so I am glad that I spent the time to reread the story. Sheds some light on a side of life that I have no exposure to.

call me crazy. anyone who knows me always asks how this could POSSIBLY be one of my favorite books. The psychotic father and his messed up ideas of religion and colonizing the "heathens" gives missions a bad name (but to me it's the idea of saying what NOT to do! and how we shouldn't have the thought of "colonizing" other people) The girls were beautifully written and creative, especially with all the palindromes!
