** spoiler alert ** The Vanishing of Katharina Linden was a page-turner and I liked the integration of German words in the text. I liked the overall story and could not predict the twist at the end. I also loved the setting and Grant really painted a detailed picture of Bad Munsterfield. However, the characters were a little underdeveloped and I was left with some unanswered questions at the end. Pia kept mentioning Stephan's lack of social skills but this was never demonstrated. What made him so antisocial and unpopular around his classmates? He seemed like a completely confident and normal teenager throughout the entire book, and it was clear that Grant just coined him as a "fellow reject" so that he could fit in with Pia. I think it would have been more interesting if she explored the issue of his struggle with unpopularity. I understand that his father was an alcoholic but that wasn't a convincing enough reason for such a normal teenager to be the most "unpopular boy in school." Why didn't Herr Schiller ever go after Pia? Why did he leave her and Stephan unharmed? Also, did anyone find Pia's mom to be the most interesting character in the book? I found the tension between the English mom and the German dad very intriguing and I wish we learned a little more about their history and what sparked the relationship. The difference in Pia's parents' customs is clearly a theme, and I wish Grant pushed more out of it. I was much more moved by their separation than by the death of the girls and I'm not sure that was the author's intention. I liked this book enough to give Helen Grant another chance. I realize that this is her first book and I'm confident the next one will be better.

I started reading Jellicoe Road about two weeks ago. I got through the first 122 pages. I was drawn in, I was curious and plotting out the characters. I was caught a little off guard at first in the two stories being told. So when I put the book down I kept thinking about it. I wasn't able to pick it up again until last night. I read from about 2:00 am until 5:30 am. I couldn't stop. I complete understand why it won the Printz this year. I loved this book. Sometimes after reading an especially moving and amazing book, I will hold it for a few minutes after I finish. It is my way of thanking it. I don't do this with many books, maybe a few dozen or less in all of my years reading. I thanked this book last night. Jellicoe Road is such a beautiful and haunting story. It is so full of tragedy and loss and hope and love. I felt the characters heartbreak, their sadness, I also felt there joy. When Taylor describes the joy she sees on Webb's face I smiled with him. I hope anyone who was on the fence about reading it, gives it a try, I don't think you will regret it.

Fascinating study of power, and in particular, the maintenance of it. However, one gets the feeling that this entire work was really just a gag, sent by one very pissed off Florentine to the ruler who exiled him from his home. Hmmm...

I have just joined the corporate world in the last three months which helps me understand the minds of the characters in the book. Basically it takes all sorts in the work place which this book portrays very well. A quick light read!!

Louis Zamperini was on his way to fame and glory on the Olympic track field on the cusp of the start of WWII. Born to Italian Immigrants, Zamperini's childhood was filled with crazy mischief, lots of love from his family, and a desire to be fast. As the world dove into WWII, Louis left the track behind and joined the air force. Unbroken tells his story. A story of survival, brotherhood and friendship, faith, resilience, forgiveness, patriotism, and redemption. This book is a must read for all. I read in disbelief and horror at times and joy and triumph in others. As a history major I have read plenty of books on WWII. However, I don't know that I ever fully comprehended a Prisoner of War's journey in a POW camp held by the Japanese. I am grateful that those who lived in unspeakable situations can tell their stories and that we can learn from them. As the world is increasingly becoming a scarier and more frightening place, it is books like these that can help us become better human beings and fight for the rights of all men.

I really like this book I thought that maybe this could have a little more plot into it. SPOILER: I don't think that it is really that big of a spoiler but I really don't think a sister could have done that. unless she has mental issues. ;). Anyways I really liked this book. It was really short
