This was much more romance than mystery. I didn't find it as gripping as the second in the series but I still enjoyed the tension between Letty and Geoff. It adds to the series and I kept my attention. I think there could have been a bit more story development with our present day Eloise and the end of the historical story became a little muddled. My biggest criticism is once again Willig almost copies Austen ad nauseum with the scenes including Letty's parents. It was painful to read. She also uses phrases like "fine eyes". I am not sure if she is trying to honor Austen or not but it doesn't work.

Even the worst Dickens is so much better than the best of most other authors, that you just can't go wrong with one of his books. While not quite as majestic as my favorite (Tale of Two Cities), this book still has plenty to recommend it.

I have read other books by Amy Tan that I loved (The Joy Luck Club, The Bonesetter's Daughter, The Kitchen God's Wife, The Hundred Secret Senses), but this was a huge disappointment. I was through 10 of 15 CDs listening to her babble before the plot finally started to get interesting. That was the first inkling I had that there was a plot. The level of excitement at that point was where the book should have started. Instead of taking it up from there and giving the reader some real drama, the story was wrapped up in a very predictable turn of events and finished off with a long post mortem on the characters (as if I gave a damn about them at this point). She spent too much time fleshing out characters I never really liked or empathized with and not enough time on plot. Argh! I wish I had read some reviews first!
