I was excited about this one. I read Pamuk's The Black Book in college, and it rocked. And Snow was a NYT Book of the Year! Can't go wrong. Ugh, except you can. This one is a stinker. For me, I mean. I don't want to say that Orhan Pamuk ever wrote anything bad, so I'll just say I didn't connect with this particular work. Half the time I had no idea what the characters were talking about, and part of me thinks its because I'm not smart enough. Here is one piece of dialogue that made me want to tear out my hair: "I have written this poem, do you think it is beautiful?" "It is. I do think it is beautiful. It is a beautiful poem." "Are you sure? Are you certain it is beautiful?" "I am certain. I know that it is a beautiful poem." "What about it is beautiful?" "I don't know, but I know that is is beautiful." "But how do you know? Are you sure it is beautiful?" "I am sure. It is beautiful." "It is beautiful. You are right. The poem, it is beautiful." AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHHH!

Thank you Kate Betts for recommending this book in THE WEEK magazine. I *loved* it. Diana was a fabulous, fascinating, incomprable woman. But this book is much more than her acheievments, it's a walk through her life in Paris, London, Budapest, New York, etc and a view of a certain time and place through her eyes. Her breathless narration is captivating -- probably why she was so successful in magazines? -- and I found myself reading passages over and over again because her opinions are as profound as they are amusing. She once tossed out an early copy of Gone with the Wind because she can't abide reading about characters on paper. How boring compared to real people in real life. If I had her life - dressing in Chanel head to toe to meet Josephine Baker in a speakeasy night after night -well she has a point. If you like fashion, this is a quick, fun read.

The artwork and writing in this gorgeous collection of Buffyverse slayer stories is leaps and bounds ahead of Buffy Season 8 or Angel After the Fall.

This is a MUST READ! Informative, entertaining, inspiring - all around it was great. Top "Made Me Think" book so far this year.

it's a better book if you realize that you're supposed to be seeing everything through philip roth's mary sue's eyes. i personally don't like mary sues (except for vonnegut). the shit that happens in this book is pretty whacked out and unbelievable. really written for a different generation (Xers and Millenials will be like, huh?)

We read this one for book club because it is on so many top 100 lists, and we wanted to find out why. The subject matter is, of course, disturbing and uncomfortable. It's modern book in that it's a book without a traditional moral to the story. A major theme seems to be the power of words to mask (the narrator uses beautiful language throughout the book to mask one of the most terrible of crimes) and elevate (in his descriptions of his beloved nymphet, Lolita) - the book itself is Humbert's atonement for his crimes against Lolita - he is enshrining her in a work of art. I feel weird and mixed and not quite sure how I feel about it, honestly. I think it's absolutely amazing that Nabokov wrote this in a language that was not his first. And I think it's fascinating how he has created a window into the mind of a man like Humbert. And (after doing some research) I can appreciate the artistry that went into the creation of this novel. Maybe it's just the depravity of the crimes that leaves such a bad taste in my mouth, or the fact that I couldn't pick up on the clues left throughout on a person revealed near the end . . . Lolita has many avid devotees, and while I can appreciate the novel and the author's literary prowress, I don't think I am one of them. I would like to read other works by Nabokov, however.

not as good as the first one, but still a great mystery.

Read for school two years in a row. Not my favorite Toni Morrison book, by any account. The imagery is good but the book sort of sits there, leaving me without any strong feelings or convictions after reading it.

A compilation of memories and regrettable truths about, basically, going from being young to…not being young. Even from a teenager’s perspective, this book is extremely funny and enjoyable, I was constantly laughing out loud and I’m sure I smiled the whole way through. My opinions may be a little bent due to the author being my uncle, but I would say this is an excellent book, and definitely an easy, quick, satisfying read. This would be a novel I recommend reading while under stress and needing to have a chance to laugh at someone else’s problems- maybe for a teenager it’s a chance to stop feeling depressed about being too young for everything, and forced into so many things that you’re not ready for and just appreciate being young and being able to laugh at those silly “not young anymore” people.
