Anne Rice seems to have got her passion back. I think this is the best since The Vampire Lestat. The "history" is questionable, but the story is engaging. Any fan of Anne Rice or biblical history would like it.

Bored bored bored. I'm so bored that I don't even want to finish this book. The plot feels very contrived and oh-so-convenient as events stack up one after the other almost neatly. The characters feel like cardboard cutouts with little depth and feeling, and the writing style seems unfinished and a bit sloppy, like this is a work-in-progress. I don't expect long flowery phrases in YA books (I leave those for the realms of Patricia A. McKillip) but if I have to read another sentence about how 'cute' someone is I might consider hurling in true teen fashion. I understand there are only so many ways for saying how attractive someone is but writing should be a creative process in which new ways or phrases are used for describing similar things or finding ways around it. Repetition in wording is not always a good thing, and not especially in this case. I feel quite guilty writing such a poor review of this book but picking this book up after finishing such an amazing YA trilogy (Iron Fey by Julie Kagawa) I wonder if I've set my expectations too high? I know there is a broad spectrum of reading available for all types and ages. And I try to not write a book off completely even if it is set for a younger audience because I know there are YA books that keep me captivated. This just isn't one of them. I think this could be a quick read for the much younger spectrum of YA readers but don't expect a complex and/or delicate plot line full of surprises and twists because you're not going to get it. But if you are looking for a simple and light story that you can flip through maybe you might like this? It could just be that this is not my cup of tea.
