I finished. Amazing. I was somewhat amused to revisit all of the major characters they've had throughout the series. I was also amused that the commentary of what kind of people mostly populate the world we live in. But the pontificating that goes on for pages and pages, I could have done without. What was it with everyone trying to pair Richard with Nicci? Think they may have a say in the whole thing? Everyone was extreme. So basically, if it wasn't for the fact that I really wanted to know how the whole thing ended, I don't think I could have slogged through to the end. Which I guess says something - it was a good enough story that I did want to know how it ended. However, I read the book in just over a day because I skimmed through the majority of it - like watching a show on TiVo in fast forward. I'm glad I'm done with it.

This book really probably deserves 4 stars, but since it took place almost entirely on shore and it involves poor Jack getting into yet more financial trouble, I didn't enjoy it as much. I actually set it down part way through because I didn't want to read about the trouble I could see coming. Then a month and a half later I found myself with nothing to read and in boredom picked it back up. I was surprised to find I had already read over half of it. Turns out I'd read the worst of it, and from their on out it got more interesting as well. I prefer the books where they are at sea, though. Especially ones with long, exhilarating chases, or storms, or both.

It always takes me a while to read any book, and I've only just started this one. Robin has a new series in the works now that has nothing to do with the world of Fitz Chivalry or the Liveship Traders, but I still have "The Tawny Man" series to read, and the "Liveship Traders" comes first, so I've finally started. I'll let you know what I think once I'm done, but I'm certain I'll love it.

This was a compelling book to read. Initially the mystery of the murder of a young man draws one into the plot, but that murder is rather quickly made secondary to the mysteries of the community during WWII, communism and the later labor movement. The descriptions of the forest and fields, of farming and the weather are all beautiful. I found it difficult to keep track of the many characters introduced early in the book, so many had similarly difficult (Polish) names. It also took a little while for me to get the rhythm of the writing, which at least initially felt choppy to me. Those hurdles were well worth jumping over, this is a book I will be recommending to friends and relations.

The literary world has surely missed out in the too early death of Steig Larsson. The entire Millenium series was so enthralling. I listened to Hornet's Nest on CD and found myself wishing I was in the car just so I could get more of the story (and I hate driving!). The plot is so intricate that I think I need to read all three over again.

"Nehemiah: Standing Firm in the Face of Opposition" is a Bible study of "Nehemiah" that has 8 main lessons and an ending summary lesson. This study can be used with small groups that meet once a week or as a personal Bible study. The study mostly focused on what Nehemiah's example showed us about church leadership, building up the church, church services, studying Scripture, and Christian living. Each lesson started with a reminder to pray and with the reading of the next one or two chapters of "Nehemiah" in your own Bible. The Bible study then asked two questions about what stood out to you in the reading. Next were eight questions to help you dig deeper into the themes found in the reading. Each of these questions was proceeded by a paragraph or two of comments by the author or material quoted from the author's Be commentaries on "Nehemiah." Next were three questions reflecting on what was learned and how it mattered to your life today. The final question asked you to pick one idea from the reading to explore further in the coming week. Then you're prompted to say a prayer asking God to guide you in the areas you've noted during the study. Overall, I felt like this Bible study would be most helpful to those in church leadership or those working closely with the church leadership. While I didn't feel like I gained much new insight into the actual events in "Nehemiah," perhaps this study might also work well for those who are unfamiliar with "Nehemiah."
