So I read this book because I remember watching Ryan Conklin on MTV's reality show "The Real World: Brooklyn" and I, like so many others that watched that show remembered that fateful day when he received the notice he was being called back to Active Duty for another tour of Iraq. I remember my heart going out to him then and my heart certiainly went out to him while reading his memoir. This is the memoir that every young man wanting to enlist needs to read before signing their signature on the dotted line. Brutally honest would be the first words that come to my head while reading this book. Ryan Conklin has written a book that in no way sugarcoats serving in Iraq. Yes, at times I did laugh out loud and there were times that I shed tears but as a whole it was a fantastic account of his Iraqi tour. A million "Thank You's" go out to every Veteran currently serving throughout branches and throughout the world.

The most memorable thing about this book was the atmospheric quality. Perfect for winter reading! And also... the ending was *surreal*... I have not been that surprised by an ending in a long while. Also Edith Wharton? Awesome chick! She wrote at a time when women mostly did not, and about subjects that showed thought and breadth from her sphere of privilege.

This book not only gives you insight on the disease but it tells you how to treat it, what to eat, how to exercise, and perhaps most importantly, what doctors you should visit. This, my friends, is one of those books that we should all carry in our back pockets just for those moments when the conversation comes up at dinner.

As I began this book I didn't want to like it. I read Louisa May Alcott's biography in the last year and it seemed like I was tarnishing her memory by reading a fictional summer of her life. In the end Ms. McNees got me with her way with words and the reminder that this book is fiction. You could tell McNees is a lover of Louisa May Alcott's writing. There were bits I would have changed in the story but all in all I really enjoyed this book.

This is a very long book, and very worth reading. It wasn't difficult to read, but it took me a while to get through it, and since it took so long, I felt a very intimate relationship with the characters. I picked up this book as I was walking to work and found it sitting on top of a trash can. I usually don't pick up things that I see on top of trash cans, but I am so glad that I did (it was a library book from the Burlingame Public Library - I'd planned on just returning it). Read this book.
