I LOVE Annie Proulx's Wyoming stories. Bad Dirt and Close Range are short stories set in Wyoming. Both kept me up til I was finished with the book. Too hard to put down.

Distinctive illustrations, but I wonder how much of the humor here will go over a preschooler's head. It might be fun for elementary school kids, though, especially for writing workshops when they are thinking about character and point of view.

I've read this book over and over and over again and I STILL like it, and more so every time. I really love how this book is written. I enjoy the secret love Winston shares with Julie. I enjoy his rants against the society he lives in. I feel for him when he debates O'brien and knows what he's saying is right but lacks the knowledge to say why. I always read with dread when he is finally brought to room 101 to break that last secret bit of defiance he holds inside. Everything about this book is amazing to me. Besides the characters and enthralling story the concepts that drive this book are one's that I believe in as well. The concept at its most basic is that democracy is a far better form of government than a dictatorship, and that communism (in all the forms it has ever appeared in on earth) is not an economic system worth supporting. This is therefore an argument in favor of a democracy-based government, and an economic system similar to capitalism. This makes the book even more enjoyable to me. Sure it just reinforces already held beliefs, but it's okay to do that every now and again.

Just before Colton turned four, he had a life-changing experience. During an emergency surgery when he almost died, Colton visited Heaven. Over the next several years, he told his parents bits and pieces of his astounding story, revealing that he met Jesus, his miscarried sister, his deceased grandfather, and many others in Heaven. This quick read is a bestseller, but I admit that I don't believe it completely. Pros: It helps readers imagine Heaven, makes Jesus feel personable and shows His love for children, and supports the idea of eternal families. Cons: I don't believe angels have wings. Four-year-olds can have pretty vivid imaginations, especially when they are exciting the interest of their parents. It was months after the surgery when Colton first mentioned having an out-of-body experience. Who knows? It was an interesting read, and I don't feel like it was a waste of my time. My guess is that sweet Colton had some type of wonderful near-death experience, but the story became embellished over the years. Heaven is for Real is written and narrated by Colton's father, who is a pastor. It is engaging, although it felt stretched a bit to be book-length. Also, the father's never-ending surprise with every new revelation about Colton's vision/dream/whatever you want to call it, was rather tiresome.

It's the latest in the series. It has it's moments but ultimately continues the tradition of his odd number books not being as good as his even number ones. The plot meanders and points are flat out dropped. The characters remain fairly stagnant (with the exception of a sudden change for exactly ONE character). And it is a surprisingly brief read.
