I liked this book for three reasons. I always like learning about different cultures. I like reading what life was like during a war. And I'm always amazed when one gender can write from the perspective of the other's with such detail. I am including two quotes here. Not sure why they struck me, but I turned the page down as I read them, knowing I'd go back to them when I was finished reading the book. That must say something, right? "We lead our lives like water flowing down a hill, going more or less in one direction until we splash into something that forces us to find a new course." "Grief is a more peculiar thing; we're so helpless in the face of it. It's like a window that will simply open of its own accord. The room grows cold, and we can do nothing but shiver. But it opens a little less each time, and a little less; and one day we wonder what has become of it." So that's that.

This is a quick easy read. It's the account of a muder mystery from the perspective with a child with autism/aspergers. It's interestering to watch the way this child's developmental delay and unique perspective influences the way he sees the world.

This is a rather amazing book from an author known for fantasy books. Based on a true story of an expedition in the 1800's to find the NW passage that disappears, Simmons builds his own world for the lost sailors that consists of 100 below zero temps, unseen monsters, and life aboard a ship frozen in the artic. I'll truly never look at winter in Minn the same way again.

This was just ok. It is by the niece of Elizabeth Daly, the author of the Henry Gamadge mysteries. She uses some of the same characters, but she doesn't have quite the style or ability of her aunt. The book is a little loose and wanders. The ending is very anti-climactic and unsatisfying and the motivation of the characters is really unclear.

Another book I read with Matthew, this was a fascinating look at the cumulative advantages that make people great. Now I finally know why Asians are superior in math: shorter syllables, better language setup for numbers, rice paddies...you should read it to see. I gave it four stars just because I thought he was a bit redundant with driving the point home about Bill Gates and a successful Jewish lawyer and Canadian hockey players. However, after reading this book, I'm finally persuaded to keep my kids where they'll be in school: the oldest in their classes. He thinks there are clear advantages to this. The heartbreak chapter was about a man with an unbelievable IQ that never reached his full potential. I like the message that a lot of people contribute to a person's success.
