There's these old scenes coming back to life, I must admit, I didn't see it coming. I am more fascinated by the emotions and the little stories within the story. I'm into the historical parts, well, this might be an overstatement. But knowing what happened to other people before the present situation just tickles my fancy every time. The ending part, is sort of predictable though and it's where the real game begun. I can't help but to connect the story to the reality of today. I know that you know that that same game is happening, figuratively. The idea gives me the chill.

Did not like how it ended.

I was excited to read this book since it had so much "buzz" surrounding it. While it was fine and read quickly, I found myself wondering "who cares?" None of the characters were particularly likeable and the plot wasn't very interesting.

Elizabeth George never disappoints! The aristocratic Lynley returns to work, still damaged after the death of his wife and unborn child. There's a new boss to contend with and she's not without her own secrets and personal problems. A young woman's body is found - a mortal wound to her neck. Of course there are a number of strange people in her life but one question seems to be at the core of her life - why did she abruptly leave the small community where she'd grown up and run off to London? Reading a book by Elizabeth George is like making a trip to England and visiting old friends. Her books take you to pubs and museums and small towns and inside the homes of interesting people you'd never have the opportunity to meet.

If an author feels the need to post a disclaimer at the end of a book explaining how she foreshadowed the horribleness of what the main character is going through at the end of the book, and then even goes on to tell her readers not to lose hope because she also foreshadowed the main character coming out of the horribleness even better than before, then that author has failed in an epic way plot-wise. Also was NOT happy with the spoon-fed regurgitation of seemingly every single thing not of the real world (but part of the world this book and the two preceding books reside in), characters, backstory, etc. For goodness sake, give your readers a tiny bit of credit for retention. I like the series, but this book could have used with some major fat-cutting and would have read much better.

This book picked up a star because of a paragraph on page 185 about how art collecting gets "Glorious buildings erected solely to house..." but coins, stamps and model trains do not. Unfortunately whatever phrase made me smile in the 240s pages or the textured dustjacket or the red on white cover or the arts cited page could not get another. Law of diminishing returns I guess. I was looking foreward to this because Martin finally wrote on a subject that I could give a rat's ass about.

I saw the movie years ago and thought I should read the book. I feel like such a tool, but I think that Ellis is pretty much dead-on about a lot of things, especially being young and naive and horny and stupid and self-centered. Maybe I'm just jaded.

Different and fun! I listened to this on an audio book while knitting, cleaning house, etc.

The book was better than the film... Which is usually the case. I enjoy Nicholas Sparks, but maybe he has become too predictable for me to really see his characters as believable. I'm grateful for a "happy" ending on this one....

A challenging read about life in an Irish border town in the 1970's told through the eyes of a boy nicknamed "Pussy".
