What a BIG surprise! I bought this book mainly on the basis of its cover. It's cute! It looks kind of like a kids' book, about a big lovable dog. I was intrigued. Well, this is definitely NOT a kids book. After reading about 30 pages or so, I was tempted to give up on it. Since I had paid good money for it, though, and it was going to be a quick read, I decided to stick it out. And I am really glad I did! This is the story of Esther, a woman who is still grieving for her husband who died a few years ago, and Winston Churchill. It takes place over the course of a few days in July 1964. Mr. Chartwell, as he first introduces himself to Esther, is a big black dog. He soon encroaches upon her life. That is actually not his true name. He named himself that after Churchill's home. Churchill knows him as Black Pat, and has lived with this creature most of his life. The whole story was so intriguing I had to look up information about Churchill online to verify that some of the facts were true. (they were) anyway, the story was about depression, and how people handle it. I thought the ending was especially good and believable. My main problem with the book overall was that I just don't get British humor. I'm sure some of the odd things said were supposed to be funny, but they went over my head. I liked all the characters. Even though Black Pat wasn't exactly likable, he was oddly believable. this is definitely a story that will stay with me. Very well done about a difficult subject.

i guess i was expecting something more like jeannette angell's "callgirl," which was more raw than this book. as a blog, it's great and it's entertaining. but why put it in book form? there was nothing new. some of her trysts were raunchy enough, but no real insights to the world of being a call girl. it's fluffy, chick-lit material. kinda like "bridget jones' diary." seriously. i guess it all depends on what you're looking for in a book about call girls. me? i want something real and this book just didn't deliver.

Card spends waaaay too much time on the boring bits of this story (ie the time spent traveling). As a result, what should have been the main conflict of the whole book doesn't happen until the very end and feels much too rushed and under developed. There were parts of this book that I did enjoy, but there were parts and characters that I just found too infuriating / vapid to care about. As much as I loved some of his earlier work, this book has left me feeling that OSC and I need to take a little break.

I really wanted to like this book when I picked it up and I suppose overall I did, but I think that's just because it had a decent ending. I kept waiting for the plot to pick up and really grab my interest but it didn't really happen until almost the very end. I didn't find Ida all that relateable or really very likable. I cared more about Tucker and his story than I did the actual love story in the book. From the description, it sounded like Ida was going to have opposition at every turn and really have to struggle to succeed, but she really didn't. I mean, the opposition was there sort of, but it wasn't actually problematic until the end. I also felt like the love story was a little rushed. Basically the whole book they're both saying they aren't looking for love and don't really want to give the other one the chance and then all of a sudden they're in love. No in between stage. There were there meetings here and there, of course, but I felt like they realized their love a bit early. I would have liked to see it stem from more than 4 or 5 encounters and brief conversations. Overall, I liked the plot, I just thought the characters could have used a bit more development and Ida could have used a few more obstacles to be more realistic. But I did appreciate that the Christian aspect of it was accurate and felt real.
Picture an "older" Magic Treehouse book, or Dan Gutman baseball card trick through time. Add to that a kid who lives in the shadow of his older brother killed 9/11. And you get the Italian immigrant story in NY to boot.

Yo read the hoo-doo section. Hurston was a trained in anthropology at Barnard under Margaret Mead. Hurston was not making that stuff up. Everything she did was for real. My great-grandmother used to talk about people planting roots on her and John the Conquerer.

I saw a recommendation for this book within another review (The 100 Cupboards). Before that, I had never heard of Brambly Hedge of Jill Barklem. This book was a nice surprise, even if it is about mice. It's inventive and imagination inspiring. Makes me want to climb through all the tiny rooms in that tree! Read the book to see what I mean. One of the other books we have checked out right now about Brambly Hedge has a picture at the end of Jill Barklem's art studio. Right in her drawing space is a cupboard of little cubbies holding all sorts of little things that go into her paintings. Items from nature and such. THAT looks inspiring too! My daughter loved this book.
