I loved this book. Loved, loved, loved it. That doesn't mean that I rushed right out and bought the sequel or anything, but I did love it to pieces. I know better than to read sequels right away. I don't know how some people are able to read book after book by the same author. Don't they need to spice up their reading? I can't go from one mystery to another. I have to go: mystery, disjointed family drama, non-fiction, classic. And so forth. Like I might have mentioned before, I'm not the biggest fan of mysteries, but make it a mystery set in old New York, and I'm in. I love being able to mentally follow the characters around on their sleuthing and try to recreate in my mind's eye what the city must have looked like a hundred years ago. I would love to be able to travel back in time, especially to eat a late-late dinner at Delmonico's, where dining at 11 p.m. was perfectly normal. I think of NYC as being such a night owl city, but I don't think there are any fancy restaurants where one can sit down to eat at 11 p.m., finish up at 3 a.m., and not feel hurried the entire time. And if I'm wrong, I'd love to know! When I first moved here, I attended a book club meeting at 808 Broadway, which is the building where the sleuths have their headquarters. I remember at the time being told where we were, but having not read the book at that time, didn't appreciate it nearly enough. I think I was more taken with the fact that my coworker, who had invited me along to his book club, knew someone who lived in such lavish quarters. Anyway, I highly recommend The Alienist to both lovers of mysteries and lovers of fiction taking place in old New York.

Well-illustrated and poeticially written, a fine introduction to Barack Obama's life for a child.

holy crap this is a depressing book. all books dealing w/ the holocaust are, but i was looking for the thread of grace. it's there, it's just not "a thread of grace and a few characters make it out together." that doesn't happen. don't expect a happy ending. fascinating history lesson of the italian resistance fighters during wwii, both jewish and catholic.

A necessary connector between Parts 1 and 3, this part is probably the least interesting. But the Jack Cade segment (while terribly distorted historically) has some intriguing sociological observations.

After reading "Bean Trees" I was really excited to start the sequel. It was a little disappointed. I didn't enjoy the characters as much and the story seemed disjointed at times. Everything tied up a little too neatly in the end. The story is told from multiple perspectives, but without the grace of Kingsolver's later novels. Nevertheless I did enjoy it.

This book surely has had a lot of book buzz - enough that I have scheduled a facilitated book discussion of it as part of my adult summer reading program at the library. It is a hefty read.

3 stars may be a little harsh and doesn't convey how much I enjoy this series, but I don't think it's quite as good as The Night Watch, which was definitely a 4 star. Like the previous novels The Twilight Watch is split into three parts which, while quite distinctive tales in themselves, form a larger story, and this really lends to making it an easy read. The story is told from the perspective of Night Watchman, Anton Gorodetsky, hero of the first novel, but also features Edgar from The Day Watch, which I was very pleased about. It also gets a little more down to fairytale type stuff with witches and werewolves which is a nice change. I look forward to reading The Last Watch, but I will be sad that it is the last one. There could easily be so many more!

So here's the thing. I made the big mistake of reading this book about 15 years ago, when I was pregnant with my second child and in the midst of morning, noon and night sickness. I thought this was a great, scary book, but then something in it triggered my gag reflex and I had to put it down. Everytime I have attempted to get back to reading it, I'm brought back to the days of vomit and have to put it back down. Maybe Stephen King is just that good. I'm going to try it again this summer.

This book was amazing, it really helped me get a glimpse into the world of extinction.
