There are few books I have read that I can say were life changing. I stumbled on this book when I needed it the most. I am not one for religious books however Joel Osteen's audio version is so easy to listen to. I can honestly say I feel positive and content with my life. He made me realize that all of my obstacles are for something. That there may be occurences in my life that I don't understand but to have trust that God has a plan. This is definitely one of my favorite books thus far.

The author's adored older brother died in the Lockerbie, Scotland crash, where an airliner blew up in midair from a bomb, killing all aboard. Ken, a teenager at the time, grows up haunted by his brother's death, wanting to know exactly what happened, and wanting to know people who knew him. It is a raw honest book, and Dornstein's life path takes him in unusual directions that even he questions. It is a powerful emotional book about dealing with the sudden death of a loved one.

This is the first book of a lesser-known series by the author of Anne of Green Gables. The Anne books are more popular, but the Emily books are deeper and darker, and some of my favorite young adult literature. Like Anne, Emily is an orphan, and goes to live with conservative relations. The three books chart her coming of age, her college years and her professional endeavors, and are excellently written. Emily is a character of ups and downs -- people who dismiss L.M. Montgomery as a flowery girl's writer have never read the Emily books (or are idiots). When she finally achieves hard-won and often bittersweet success (in life, in work, in love), you are soaring with her. Montgomery's work is constantly under-estimated, and the way the books are marketed doesn't help (the flowery script, the swoony illustrations). There are many layers at work in her stories, and some pioneering feminist concepts tucked in between the deep appreciation of nature, the commentary on the stuffy contemporary society of her day, and the delightful, well-drawn characters.

How much do you like basketball? If you really love it, if the debate about who should be the MVP in the NBA actually interests you, this is a great book. Otherwise, well, skip it. Since I love the game, I loved the book.

Before I started this book, all I knew about it was that it was dark. "Dark" doesn't begin to do it justice. This is a book that slowly reveals family dysfunction on such a catastrophic scale as to redefine the archetype. It takes about half the book to set everything up, and in the 2nd half, it really gets a full head of steam and barrels down the road, blasting through any kind of protective roadblock you may have in front of your most tender conceptions of happiness. The story is really well-told. I was surprised that there was no singular build-up to a singular climax; there are a number of story arcs that get resolved in the end; some are resolved to your satisfaction, some are not. This is not a feel-good book. But it's a damn good one.

While this book wasn't one of my very favorites, it is definitely a scary book - even when I re-read it as an adult. Not a book to read alone at night.

This was a very interesting and well written book. What the Donner Party really went through is amazing. A good historical read. (Based on letters from the time)

Dense as anything. On the other hand, Carlyle in best humorous form. Narrated by an English editor trying to make sense of a German philosopher's "Philosophy of Clothes." Not for the faint of heart.

Stephen King says: "Pathological liar of dubious identity goes bonkers while looking for a hidden tomb in the Egyptian desert after World War I. Tragic, pathetic, blackly funny...and with a strange, growing undercurrent of horror. You have never read a novel like it." Stephen King said it all. Definitely worth the read. Hard to figure out what's the truth, which makes reading this kind of irritating and fun at the same time. Could have done without so much detail in the middle - could have cut out a few pages, but worth it, all the same!
