I can honestly say the best part of this book was the last chapter. I did not like most of it and had to re read several pages to try and figure out what exactly happened in certain scenes. Some parts of the storyline were rather rushed and a few things were explained away with a only a sentence or two. I think this story could have been fleshed out a bit more and I'm not talking about the sex scenes. I'm not a prude in any sense but those scenes were almost laughable and I started to roll my eyes when I got to one.

This historical novel tells the story of two families separated by 60 years. One caught up in the Vel' d'Hiv roundup of Parisian Jews in July 1942 and another in modern Paris confronting their own secrets. While events in both time periods drive the two narratives, the story is as much about memory and its suppression--both collective and individual. A compelling read, this work personalizes a tragedy involving thousands by focusing on the simple action of one little girl and how it could shatter lives over the insuing six decades.

There's a scene in Gilmore Girls where Lorelei stays home one night because she can't put this book down. I can fully understand why now. I loved this book. We read books to escape, and this book had me leave my world and be a cliche rock star in the hair metal 80s. It's not about liking hair metal, and it's not about liking rock, and it's not even about Motley Crue (who I knew nothing about at the start of this adventure). It's about what drives people, how lives intersect, and about page-turning, fun writing, from a professional writing. I think not knowing about them was actually a benefit, because I never anticipated what was coming. In short, I loved it loved it. Look forward to reading more of Strauss's books asap. Warning: The Surgeon General advises that reading this book could get "Dr. Feelgood" in your head for periods of up to 6 hours. Consider yourselves warned.

Crossed was fantastic! CONTAINS SPOILERS!!!!!!!!! Just as good as Matched! Cassia is a very brave girl. She chases down Ky through insane danger and never gives up. I can't stand the way she won't choose between Ky and Xander. I like both of them, but I want her to be with Ky. Xander is more like a best friend love and Ky is a true love. She gave up everything for him and crossed lines that should never be crossed. I was upset that Vick died. I didn't think he would. I was glad he got to see a rainbow trout, but as he said before it was a bad omen. It brought him to his death. I wasn't surprised that Indie was stealing stuff and keeping secrets from Cassia. I was shocked that Xander was part of the Rising! I couldn't believe it. And now Xander has everything Cassia could want. Which makes me mad because Ky only joined the Rising for her. Now she is just going to forget him and move on. I don't trust the Rising either. I agree with Ky. I was glad that Eli chose to go with Hunter. I was surprised that Cassia didn't get her own vial from that cave. Seems like she would have kept it. I didn't like how Cassia and Ky had to be seperated in the end. They spent half the book looking for each other, the other half mad at each other, then they make up and now they don't even get to be together. seriously? How gay is that? I also wanted to read more lovey dovey scenes, but there were hardly none. That made me sad. Still it was an awesome book. I love the world Condie creates. It feels so real, like I am a part of it. I can picture and feel everything. She is truly an amazing writer. I loved the part where Cassia didn't know what dancing was. It made it so realistic and clear to me. It was a little surprising too. I can't wait to read the third book and I'm just hoping that Ky and Cassia will finally get to be together.

This is a great follow on book to Michael Pollan's "The Omnivore's Dilemma." While Pollan discusses the role of meat in our diet, Bittman takes the conversation a little further and writes about American's obsession with meat and how reducing consumption will help us loose weight, be healthier, and help save the planet. His story is engaging because he welcomes us into his personal story. He does not preach but gives great advice and suggestions. And the recipes are on par with his wonderful, "How to Cook Everything." This is not a vegetarian guide to eating - meat can be a responsible part of our diets. Bittman just helps explain how the simple choice of what we eat can change the world.

Beautifully written descriptive passages of beaches, swimming and that lazy summer holiday feeling. Made me miss the beach.

And they say that America, like Rome, has no indigenous philosophy! Oddly, this is considered a classic, even though Rawls doesn't really answer any of his own questions, but uses a handy thought experiment to avoid doing so. That said, I feel like he establishes a better basis for government than any of the European competition. That's amazing, but this book is still ponderous and boring as shit.
