I hate it when I have to dislike a book that I agree with in principle because of the way those principles are presented. The author is a lawyer, not a journalist, but still the spin is profound. I felt duped midway through to find out she's married to a cattle rancher, and that fact shoots holes in her credibility. While she does make some good points, this isn't a sustainable-food-lit book that I would recommend to anyone just getting into the subject.

generally speaking, i loathe short stories, but they are truly gaiman's medium; i think his work loses a bit of its sparkle when stretched out to long form, so snippets of this sort are perfect.

Just participated in my first sail boat race (and I didn't fall overboard!) this evening and it made me think of this book that I read in junior high. My first arm chair travel memoir. A sixteen year old drops out of school to sail around the world alone in a 26 foot sailboat. Great adventure/coming of age story...and it's a true story.

Man, am I ever in love with the quilt designs and projects in this book. Bright bright colors, and I really like the Flea Market Fancy fabrics from Denyse Schmidt's line.

A haunting book about a woman who loses her son in a drunk-driving accident. The driver was her former friend. The accident destroys her life, she and her husband decide to buy a boat and sail for months on end as they each deal with their grief in their own way.

Okay. So I hated this book in junior high. Really. I really, really, really hated it. I did not understand why this book existed, found it droll and boring, found it not even worth the paper it was printed on hardly. Here is why - 1. nature was boring. I lived in the city. 2. These people were boring. Why did they do this to one another? 3. Why did these people exist and who cares. And then came in universality, an idea of what theme meant and that it could apply to me, that I enjoyed reading texts like this and not Stephen King anymore (Yes. I mentioned Stephen King in a review of an Edith Wharton book. So what?), and that I then went to college and spent tens of thousands of dollars to learn how to become an effective and engaging writer and well-read person. So, I have read it. I have had my heart broken and have broken hearts. I understand beauty and art and execution now. And I still think this book does not necessarily belong in a 7th grader's hands. That said, I enjoyed this book a lot. There is not really a tremendous amount to say about it. I think it is simple, the symbolism is really surface and mundane, and I also think that the ultimate rising action is nothing to really write home about since it is slow and really depends on a lot of minute actions by the protagonist (which, even though romantic, I could definitely construe as creepy most of the time - I wonder if it had been written by the wife?). What I did enjoy was the tragedy of it all and the fact that my understanding of how it happened and worked out in the end os completely different now that I am older, married, and the same age or so as Ethan was in the book. I also think that the descriptions of New England and Massachusetts in winter were absolutely amazing and I think that that is really where the beauty of this book lies. I would recommend this book to any married man, yes, and I would also recommend all New Englanders read it. But I do not think that your average 7th-9th graders really could care about it. As I didn't years ago. My teacher and school ruined it for me.

This is an insightful story about forgiveness with a really interesting group of people who make up the Godhead. I would be interested in seeing how you feel about the book.

"Future joys are like tropic shores: out in to the immensity that lies before them they waft their native softness, a fragrant breeze that drugs the traveler in to drowsiness and makes him careless of what awaits him on the horizon beyond his view." This book is about a woman, Madame Bovary, in search of future joys at the expense of present ones. I was mesmerized by the main character and mortified at the same time. The author's style is very accessible- a clas indeed!
