Still totally tripping from Brooks merging the Running with The Demons series with Shannara. Still pissed that the first Brooks book to be made into a motion picture is Landover not Sword of Shanara. These books are really well written but this trilogy lacks the fantasy epicness of Shannara and the hard core apocalypse now of The Word and the Void books. Still, plan on reading Gypsy Morph as soon as it comes my way. What i think i'ld like to do is read the whole of it chronologically instead of how it was written...starting with Running with the Demon, ending with what would it be....the Voyage of the Jerle Shannara? Hmm. have to dig up my Shannara books and figure that out. That would be somthing like 25 books. Hmm. Maybe when i retire.

While I agree with Ruether on her social aims, I almost completely disagree with the way she goes about it. To me Ruether is not speaking for a progressive kind of Catholicism, but that Catholicism imitate progressivism. "The world is such," she says, "therefore the Church should be such." She speaks as if the Church can or could merely operate upon the whims of democracy or whatever is in fashionable taste at the time. Yet, when she speaks of the Second Iraq War, the desiderata is no longer what the public wants ("we want war!") but now the traditional teachings of the Church must be invoked to stem the influence of opinion. Simply, Ruether is guilty of a great deal of hypocrisy and secular dealings. It is not, and I repeat, it is not because of the things she is fighting for. Those are good things. Her flaw is the foundation upon which she bases them.

Ah, the book which ties all the loose beginning threads of the Discworld together! A perfect way to enter the series (although not necessary to), this book follows Rincewind the nearly competent wizard and the ever-mysterious Luggage, and frankly... it's wonderful! Want a short romp with fantasy-satire and a non-stop laugh? Read it. Now.

Awesome thriller here. This one got the balance of pacing, character development, and plot twists just right. The Antarctic thriller market seems to have exploded recently, and this book makes a fine addition to it.

I want to be Mr. Ripley...well, ok, not a gay man...not that there is anything wrong with that...or murderer for that... but living the life of a bachelor (or in my case bachelorette) in 1950s Italy...

This is a sweet story about an unlikely friendship that develops between a young boy and the man who his mother left him with when she abandoned him. It's a simple and quick read.

One of my favorite books ever. His collections of poems are sweet! the subject is varied: romantic love to existentalism. they are short and were not appreciated at the time, however, therein lies his genius. chosen nouns and adjectives are more than enough to express himself. his essays are witty, and interesting, read them, enjoy them dissect them. you'll love them too.

I really considered giving this book a 4/5, but I opted for a 3 just to avoid the all-too-common phenomena of grade inflation (how I made it through college). The story is interesting despite its meandering character, the first part of the book (litterally up until the 50% mark on my kindle) is about his abandonment on and subsequent treck across Africa and the second part is about his adventures as a pirate. By far, the most annoying thing about this book is that it would superficially describe some great adventure and then say something like, "but that account is far to long to be mentioned here." Also, the end is somewhat hastily tied up. Other than that, it made for a decent adventure tale. The worst: Superficial descriptions of important or interesting events. The best: The adventures described are fairly interesting.

It's 250 years after the events of The Fall of Hyperion. The book opens with a prisoner in a creative execution device, writing the story of how he became the bodyguard of the One Who Teaches, the messiah foreshadowed and foretold at the end of The Fall of Hyperion, who turns out to be a twelve-year-old girl (at least at the start of this story). His story begins as a native guide to off-world hunters on now-familiar Hyperion and then develops into a travelogue and chase through some of the worlds of the old Hegemony. Endymion is the weakest book of the Hyperion series. While some hooks were left for a sequel, Endymion feels a bit bolted on at times and Simmons engages in some retconning (retroactively changing or reinterpreting the past story). It's also a less interesting story; it doesn't have the storytelling brilliance of Hyperion or the space opera sweep of The Fall of Hyperion, and sometimes feels boring or pointless. It is mostly a travelogue; how much you enjoy the book is likely to have a lot to do with how interesting you find the exploration of the worlds of the old Hegemony. There is a larger plot, though. Endymion introduces the Pax, the new government that has taken over after the conclusion of The Fall of Hyperion and now dominates mankind far more than the Hegemony did. Half the book is told from the perspective of Raul Endymion and the other half from the perspective of a priest of the Pax who is chasing Raul and Aenea, and the Pax sections I thought were the strongest of the book. The Pax government is chilling but believable given their technology, and for most of the book Simmons does a good job slowly building a picture of their nature and motives. Unfortunately, he then spills many of the beans in exposition near the end of the book rather than giving the reader a chance to put two and two together, which partly spoils the effect. Much of the trouble with Endymion is that it's a bridge book. It's trying to take the world of a mostly completed space opera story and prepare it as a backdrop in which to tell a very different story about religion, belief, and messiahs. Accordingly, it is neither fish nor foul, ends up feeling occasionally forced, and leaves one with the feeling that not a lot really happened. The Rise of Endymion is the real payoff to this story, and Endymion serves primarily to get the reader to the point where that story can be told. I understand why people don't like this book. I still did like it, due largely to the enjoyable conversation with Marin Silenus at the beginning of it, the Pax portions of the book, and Aenea. Aenea becomes one of my favorite fictional characters in The Rise of Endymion, but her self-confidence and playfulness are already present here. But this isn't Hyperion or even The Fall of Hyperion; expect the process of setting up the story to feel awkward. My rating - 4/5
