Newberries seem like hit and miss, at least to me. Some years they deserve it ("Holes", "The Graveyard Book"). Other years...not so much. The writing was immature, even for a ten-year-old. It was all telling, no showing. I'm pretty sure the reason this person got it was because of the minority main character, the tragedy, and something akin to heartwarming family-ness. No me gusta.

Most people seem to like this book more than the first book, but I actually enjoyed this less. I think the plot of this book is weaker than the first, and not only that, it is a bit messier, with several subplots that border on family melodrama. I think one of the worst things about first person pov is being stuck in the head of someone you don't really like. Ok, I do like Lee, but there is an immaturity to her inner thoughts that seems incongruous with the supposedly stoic and rational nature of the Shields. All the inner dialog gets really annoying very quickly. However, the best part of this book and series continues to be the incredible chemistry between Taro and Lee. And come on, are they ever going to get together? Somehow I didn't exactly enjoy this book but am still left wanting to read on in the series.

The first school book I ever truly gave up on. An interesting plot twist, but not worth digging through the language. I hear the movie is good.

Strout's empathy and powers of observation amaze me.

Thomas Friedman has been around the block. This book isn't just another book about the intricacies of the conflicts in the Middle East. Friedman lived in Beirut and was a correspondent in the Middle East for many years, and his stories really provide an interesting perspective from a really great writer and really great observer. This book would be interesting to anyone who is iterested in the history of the Middle East crises (and that should be everyone).

Joan Didion's daughter was stricken by this horrible infection (which took her months to recover from) and right after her daughter went into the hospital, her husband dropped dead at the dinner table. It's a beautifully written and very sad book, an examination of how someone deals with the un-dealable.

Give it a try even if you don't like poetry. I'm a numskull and enjoy it irregardless.

my first and probably favorite Amis book. but everyone should bear in mind that I am (obviously) a sucker for the upper-middle-British-class humor. i am. i am.

First I'd like to thank Harlequin for reaching out to "Good Choice Reading" and offering us "A Creed In Stone Creek" for review. It's an honor. I have to start off by saying that this was a cute western romance book. I love contemp romance but this book was a bit fast paced with its characters and slow paced with the story. Here's what I liked: 1. It's a complete delight to see a single man drop his life to adopt his best friend's child and raise him as his own. 2. I like that Melissa is a woman that has a career and can manage on her own. 3. I love how Steven approached any situation when it came to Matt and his family. He respected Matt enough to let him make some decisions Here's what I didn't like: 1. I didn't like how the main characters story was hot and cold. 2. Now I love Matt's character. But he seems to be a bit too smart for his age, even if he's a gift child. 3. I didn't like how the story was prolonged with other subplots. Overall it was a sweet story. How could you not like a man who takes resposibility for his deceased best friend's son without a thought. That was admiring. A man who dropped his life to raise his "new" adopted son. And then there's Melissa, a woman with character and a great career whose well educated and established. And I love how both Steven and Melissa have a great family bond. Seeing how their family supported them throughout the book was heart-warming. Despite the little issues I had with the story, Linda still managed to keep my attention. I give this book a 3.5 stars. This is a good book for you if you're into western romance.

Bu çok ilginç bir kavram! Belki de sabrım yok, ama gerçekten acımasız bir editör kullanabileceğini düşündüm.
