Shame on me for leaving this unread on my shelf for nearly six years. I first bought it knowing nearly nothing about it, simply that it was a highly regarded piece of literature about 100 years of life in a village. Shortly after I bought it, friends coincidentally suggested it to me, but told me nothing other than that I'd enjoy it. I did, and it is about life in a village - and it's not. Quite simply this is nothing like what I was expecting. The prose is absolutely lyrical - it's history as a fairy tale. It's a fairy tale history though, where the fantastic is in the mundane. Macondo (the village) exists on the very edge of reality, that's not to say in a fantasy world, but one in which humans don't belong. It's founded by a family afflicted by solitude and nostalgia and, although the story follows that family faithfully, it's clear that those qualities are as much a part of the character of Macondo as of the individuals. The family and the place exist together in a way that reflects so many partnerships - building together and finally destroying eachother. I completely understand why no-one told me anything about it, and why it was so difficult to find synopses of it - the book is a highly original work of art and it's simply too difficult to know how to even begin describing its many, many layers.

I thin every young girl in high school/college/20's should read this book!

Beautifully written and novelistic in its graceful account of family, love, and triumph!

I was excited to read this book because Klein is so highly reccomended by many authors I like (thomas Ligotti, Ramsey Campbell, etc.) but I was a little underwhelemed by these stories as works of terror. They are all intelligently written but forgettable and not particuluarly scary. The scariest story "Petey" comes accompanied with such a hamfisted attempt at satire that it is also the most difficult to get through. Klein has a social conscience that belies his stated intention to merely entertain the reader. He surrounds the horror in the story with a liberal modernistic philosophy and a journalistic style that is quite innovative but when it comes to the actual horror in the stories it is definitely of a trite creature feature style that feels a little contrived coming out of the 1980's.

"Friends accept this, the only intimation." Oh, and it's to be at Little Paddocks, just by the by. And a body does turn up and Miss Marple is there, of course, an deals with the contretemps as gentilely as might be expected. I do so love Miss Marple; I wish she were my Great-Aunt!!

Theodosia Throckmorton is not your typical 11 year old. She has the unique ability of being able to see ancient curses that are attached to artifacts. Since her father is the head curator at the Museum of Legends and Antiquities in London, this gift comes in handy... For the entire review please go to the Best Paranormal & Urban Fantasy Review site on the web, Bitten By Books, for the review of Theodosia and the Serpents of Chaos in it's entirety. You won't be sorry.

I've had this book on my reading list since it was first published. Remember hearing an interview on NPR. It's an intimate look at a completely different socioeconomic group - as compared to white, middle class me. It follows four teens in the Bronx and gave me a better understanding - albeit disappointing - of the failures of the "system" and the vicious cycles that trap generations upon generations in repeating the past. Book club.

This story about J. Sutter, a professional junketeer, starts out very promising. I laughed at the truthfully satirical portrayal of greedy freelance journalists. As the story of John Henry progresses, though, the book loses its focus and becomes a little too abstract.

I start to want to say I'm not a big fan of graphic novels, but then I realize I really liked Persepolis, for example. So I suspect the real reason I want to forgive this book for so much is because so many friends like it so much. But being a better-developed work than superhero comics really doesn't say terribly much. Watchmen is an interesting read, but I don't think I'd recommend reading it if you don't care (at least theoretically) about comics, and their culture.
