I'm not the overly emotional type- don't usually cry in movies, and less so in books. This book had me struggling to keep them back. I've read complaints that Dr Gabaldon can be long winded and overly discriptive- to me, that's one of the best parts of this book. Reading it is like watching a movie- it's poetically descriptive, and alot of the "little, minor" details are actually literary uses for metaphor, foreshadowing, and other ingenius literary elements... in the way Steinbeck used alot of the same tools in The Grapes of Wrath. Now into book 2, I'd say this series is less "romance" but more about love. So I wouldn't recommend this to just any romance reader- I wouldn't say you have to like "historical romance" or highlander stuff, but if you have you're a lit-nut, enjoy reading full thorough setting details and character arcs with a full bodied plot, I'd say this series is for you. Oh- and if you don't mind your heart just breaking apart. Final Notes: The hero - Jamie Fraser- my biggest complaint with most romance novels is that the hero/love interest/bad boy loses all of this edgy badness at the end, and turns into a whiny, needy, too much sugar sweet kind of guy- and all the things about him that made us (the reader) adore him abruptly disappear. Not the case here. Jamie starts out funny, sweet, and underneath, quite dangerous. And nothing changes... in fact, I'd say in this book he's a little harder, a little tougher, a little rougher, which falls in line with the horrors he'd survived in the previous book. The tender sappy moments he has with Claire are precious- you don't feel like that "eww too sweet!! turn the page!" feeling... he's an amazing character. One of my absolute favories. The heroine - another shock- I usually hate heroines in novels lol but not Claire Fraser. Brave, smart, funny, a survivor, strong, she never comes of "helpless" or "damsel in distress" even when she's in great distress.... but never too harsh, never too "masculine", never whiny, never weak... and the love between her and Jamie you honestly want to read about forever. It's not a perfect relationship, and they're not perfect towards eachother... but it's real love. The real love that is imperfect but you fight for it. The Plot - Plots within plots :) my favorite kind- keeps you on your toes. It starts with Claire wanting to tell her daughter the true identity of her father. Then, it's trying to stop the Jacobite rising with Jamie.... then trying to help the Jacobites succeed.... and then. Can't be bored though with so much going on :) The sex - no sex in thsi book. not really. Just love. To me, there's nothing written that make your heart race or perk your carnal senses- but scenes that will touch your heart, other scenes that you'll grimmace at but understand, and at the end.... a scene that makes you go "really?" but when you sit back and silently think about the moment when you take your last breath.... doesn't everyone imagine that they'd think on the one they love and wish for one last time? If I were to compare the love-making in this book (and I NEVER use that word lol) and the sex in others to food- Most romance novels would be somewhere between... plain yogurt (as in bland, or kind.. just there sex scene) and spicy buffalo wings. This book, however, would be... warm creme brulee. I'm not saying creme brulee tops spicy buffalo wings every time (and as for plain yogurt, anything tops that) both are extraordinary if you're in that type of mood. The end - well... it's not a shock, but you definitely want to know more! I'm doing to know what happens and I KNOW what happens lol but the "ending" of the 18th century story... that nearly tore me up... it's twist your guts around in knots you wanna cry... but still- absolutely wonderful.
