I can see why it was groundbreaking, but I think that it's status as a "classic" book is only because of the writing style. The story isn't that great and although I know the language was supposed to be edgy, I found it slightly offensive. I view this book as one of those that has it's place in literature because of what it did to change the world of writing when it was published, by the book itself is not that good.

This is a difficult book to rate. Some parts I give three stars, but the end, which I thought was the best by far, I'd give a perfect five stars. Yes, it's long and it's work but for the glimpses of pure genius that reveal themselves every once in a while, it is COMPLETELY worth it. There were passages that I found purely exhilarating to read. Not because of anything exciting that was happening in the plot, but because of the language - my God, the language. On several occasions, Bolano manages to fit an entire story into a sentence or a word. And the images he conjures up make it seem as if he's performing nothing less than magic on the reader's mind. I wouldn't recommend this to everyone - especially if you're more a plot heavy reader - but I am very glad that I read this. It was an experience. And one I won't soon forget.

Poignant. Touching. Sweet. Short. I think of the field of wheat and the rose every time I rejoice in something I treasure simply because it is familiar and mine, which is pretty much most of what I own and those that I love. Most of all my husband and son and the things associated with them. What a lovely metaphor.

Shimayne made up a story based on this book. It was the greatest story ever told. So I cannot help but give this book great marks. Shimayne also was the one who read it to us.

Experimental form. Presented as more of a encylopedia than a dictionary. This book explores a mysterious world in a mysterious format. The "male" version conatains one extra line than the "Female" version, which changes a lot. Non serial literature in it's most unique form.

Tom Jones is considered the first novel. I can certainly see where it would be so, because in many ways it still has the hallmarks of a text that was not written with the flow of a story in mind. It's interesting, entertaining, and in many ways quite sly, but it also manages to be rambly, lengthy, unnecessarily verbose - and coming from yours truly, with my own penchant for being verbose and high tolerance for purple prose and book length, this is not a compliment - and in dire need of a good, knowledgeable editor. I read it for class, so it cannot be said, for my sins, that I was going into it with much eagerness, but at the same time i was by no means reluctant or loathe to read it, as in my experience it is always worthwhile to give books a try. On the whole, I would not say i was disappointed. I found myself entertained by the notions of the period, the historical background, and the characteristics that Fielding seems to sketch out so ably; at the same time I found myself glossing over some of the more gregarious asides, wishing that someone would take the book and 'tighten it up' so to speak to make the story flow a little better, and to make the reader a bit less inclined to flip pages as he goes. Admittedly, the story itself takes very much second place to social satire and setting, which makes the deviations from the plot, irrelevant digressions and scene studies that much more forgivable. You don't read Tom Jones to read a fascinating or unique plot; you read it for the social comedy and the author diatribes. Thus, though it leaves much to be desired as a novel, it certainly carries its own as a book.
