Enjoyed this book, actually more than Anna Karenina.Vivid and thoughtful descriptions of human nature, including adaptation to environment.

Even though I am not an avid reader of fantasy novels, Tolkien's philosophy is mind-opening. I still quote one of his phrases in the book: "We all contain the seeds of evil which may be brought to germination by exposure to evil." I also find Tolkien's picture of human beings quite intersting: Contrary to the peaceloving, happy Hobbit people who live a life close to nature, man's strive for the superlative, or his insatiable hunger for more and more power makes him corruptible and eats him up until he is only a mere shadow of his former self. Interesting food for thought.

This is a good primer on the political decisions behind the launching and managing of the war in Iraq, by one of the reporters with the closest access to the White House. Although Woodward was criticized by liberals for his first two books about the Bush administration, for being too close and too laudatory, he was obviously saving the negative stuff for the third volume. This one doesn't pull any punches. State of Denial was criticized by conservatives for being released so close to the 2006 congressional elections, and was used as a prop by some of the Democrats in that race. This is an important book. Whatever your opinions, the information here is extremely important.

I enjoyed this story. There were times that the garment descriptions made me skip sentences, but it is about a clothing store so it made sense. The mystery was good, and the characters were very likeable. On to the next one!

I started rereading this series because of John Scieszka's bizarre hatred of Little House on the Prairie. In attempting the perfectly noble task of getting young boys to read more, Scieszka has continuously heaped scorn on that book, banishing it to the girl ghetto of the Sweet Valley High and American Girls series. Putting aside the unfair comparison to syndicate titles published for purely commercial reasons, his assesment of Little House as a book purely for girls is infuriating. For one thing, gender-segregated reading rubs me the wrong way. For another thing, these books contain aspects that any child might enjoy. There's farming, hunting, construction, cooking, locust plagues, wolf packs, riots, blizzards, tragedy, hope, family, hard work, preserverance, horses, dogs, railroads, envy, loss, and triumph. Ignore the sugary-sweet, insipid television series - these books are genuine and engaging.

very creepy and the stories all turn into the stranger within ourselves. the shortest story "Fair Extension" was great but was also the most cruel.

This was another excellent book by Karen White. I think it is my favorite tied with her Montague Street Series. I couldn't put this book down today. So many little twist and turns. Great characters each with their own story.

A useful resource that corrects many of the mistakes in George Stone's 1961 Glossary of the Construction, Decoration, and Use of Arms and Armour. Despite the title it's not actually complete (an impossible task!) but it does make a brave attempt. My only complaints are the reliance on drawings rather than photos, and some overly short entries for items that have a fair amount of information available. I can understand the first editorial choice as one simply to save money. Hiring an illustrator to copy photos is much cheaper than paying for permissions to reproduce so many photos. My second criticism is a bit more serious. For example, the entry for the ahlspiess is only about 70 words long, while much more is known about this weapon. Given the vast scope of this book, I guess they had to put a limit on length somewhere! These are minor criticisms. This is an excellent work that must have taken a vast amount of research. Well done. If you have deep pockets, I'd suggest also buying Stone's book too, for the hundreds of photos and his deep knowledge of Asian weapons. If you can only buy one, buy The Complete Encyclopaedia of Arms and Weapons.
