I blame this book for my poor performance in Philosophy 101 at OSU. I picked up a copy of it to have something to read at lunch one afternoon from the now defunct Long's Bookstore. A book about the end of the world seemed to be appropriate light reading at the time. It had me from the first pages where it listed the dramatis personae. It introduced Hastur, a fallen angel and duke of hell. Then, Liguer, a likewise fallen angel and duke of hell. Then, Crowley, an angel who didn't so much fall as saunter vaguely downwards. As a geek, I'd read Sandman, and I'd seen the massive accumulation of Terry Pratchett's Diskworld books piling up at the book store. However, it was this book that ensured that almost all of my disposable income over the next several months went to improve the bottom lines of whatever bookstore I was closest to upon finishing either one of Pratchett's books or Gaimen's. If you haven't read it yet, go get a copy. If you have, good for you. If the copy you've read is mine, don't worry about getting it back to me at this point. I've already replaced it.

When I picked this book I didn't expect much. And I was right. The development of the story is too slow that I'm actually surprised I finished it so fast. The real action started at about 70% of the book. Before that point it's just all about theories. And the theories themselves aren't as fascinating as the author might have thought. Free will? Fixed future? Too banal. There were a couple of theories that I liked though, especially exclusion principle applied to future/past but the rest was just meh. I think the creators of the tv show did much better, took the best out of the book. Too pity it got cancelled.

The Devil in the White City is really two books - the one about the Devil, and the one about the White City. Both are compelling. Larson's description of the World's Fair is incredibly vivid and rich in historical detail. The depth of research that clearly went into this part of the book is all the more impressive because it never distracts from the writing's greatest strength, which is the author's ability to find narratives in a nebulous body of information. Larson depicts a dark, complex time in which the manic energy and ambition of massive personalities brought some much-needed light to the world. Simultaneously, he contrasts his optimistic vision of the Fair's far-reaching impact with the pure, simple evil of a serial killer. The thematic connection is a little contrived, but the interwoven narratives give a wonderful (sometimes chilling) sense of immersion in the time. In spite of all the detail, the book is unashamedly more interested in story than history and undoubtedly guilty of a certain amount of embellishment. If it were a film, it'd be an incredible docudrama, but an imperfect documentary. Which is great.

Hannigan handles a couple of tough subjects extremely well. I found all the Delly words a little too much for an eleven year old, but overall a great story.

I didn't actually care for this book most of the way through, it was tough to get through, but then the ending was amazing and made it all worthwhile.

Clarity and compassion. Kundera sees his characters, his time and place. History, philosophy, sentiment, politics and art all come together, dropping from 30,000 feet to the most human levels.

This book is wild! SANDMAN GOES TO HELL, it might be hilariously called! SANDMAN is always a dece read (just finished 'em all somewhat recently in fact) but can tend to take itself a little too seriously, maybe? I don't know, it's still cool. I have a lot more of these to review before the night is out...now I know why THE GOOD SOLDIER SCHWEIK took so long for me to read: cuz I was reading all this FABLES / JACK OF FABLES / SANDMAN gook while I was supposed to be readin' it!

The title of this book sums up the content nicely. The author, admittedly, is a completely neurotic mother. I got the impression that she realizes she's a work in progress and is striving to tone down her erratic behavior and her tendency toward being dogmatic. Although I love reading and do read a lot, it's very difficult for me to give up TV for one day. The author has some interesting points, but I agreed with her husband, who described her as a "zealot" about the subject of No TV.

Stark, raw, painful and moving. Ariel as it was meant to be (that is, the form Plath intended it to be published as and NOT the mutilated first run edited by Hughes.) From Lady Lazarus: "Out of the ash I rise with my red hair And I eat men like air"
