I read Slide a couple months ago, and I normally tend to forget characters a bit, or the plot, or many of the scenes, but I still remember everything about Slide. And that’s saying something! A book that lingers…characters that stick with you, Slide has it. And that’s the whole point of reading a story in the first place. I couldn’t put this book down. I HAD to know the ending, and I read this in one sitting, furiously flipping the pages. It has that “who did it” appeal and the mystery was addictive. I really loved Vee’s “ability”. I found it refreshingly original. At first she seemed to only be a voyeur in another person’s body when she slid, but in time she learns she’s capable of much more. I’m definitely looking forward to Vee exploring her powers, and discovering the connection she shares with her mother. There’s a bit of a love triangle, but I love them, especially when done well, and I think this one was. And I also feel that others who don’t dig triangles wouldn’t be bothered. Rollings and Vee’s relationship blossomed over time. I loved how Rollings was there for Vee, how when everyone else abandoned her, he came through. Zane was more of an enigma. I'm still a bit reeling over the ending. Wow. There’s so much more to the relationships in the story, between Vee and her sister, their relationship with their father. It’s gripping and emotional. I highly recommend Slide for those who like realistic fiction with a twist of the paranormal, thrilling mystery, and characters you will remember.

I have to say the story was interesting to keep me turning pages. In part I kept hoping the would explain what happened to the world, but I guess that is not the story. It is the story of a father an his son, trying to carry the fire of humanity. I agree this was a good book, but I am not sure why it won as many awards as it did. It is goodm but it isn't that good.

Great read. Pivotal in my understanding of theology and the whole council of Scripture. Read Summer of 2005.

Don't see what all the hype was about with this book.

This was a fun, fast-paced, treasure hunt of a thriller that was fairly entertaining.[return][return]However, it did take some time to get used to the clipped sentences. It seems as though the author were seeing a movie in his head and was trying his hardest to keep his writing up to the fast pace. [return][return]The language had no real flavour to it. It was at its most entertaining when you thought of it as a movie tie-in novel, just without the benefits of actually having a film to watch before or afterwards. If you can 'see' this book in your head, you're as golden as the treasure they seek.[return][return]In short, the plot was there, the characters were waiting in the wings, and the language failed miserably. But it will work as an escapist read for half-hearted, beach-time readers.

In A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, Ishmael Baeh, a former child soldier in Sierra Leone, tells the story of his experience during that nation's brutal civil war. Baeh was drafted into the army by force at the age of 13, and spent the next three years braving the gunfire of rebel soldiers and manning his own AK-47. He witnessed atrocities, and, at times, committed them, as he trekked across the country with his unit. At 16, he was rescued by UNICEF, rehabilitated and eventually was able to move to New York City to finish high school. His beautifully-written, chilling tale puts a human face on a very real problem facing the global community. Whether you're aware of the child soldiers issue already or no, this book is worth reading.
First book in the Russian urban fantasy series. Set in Moscow, it describes a typical war of darkness against light, except that both sides are Machiavellian bureaucracies. Followed by Day Watch, Twilight Watch, and most, recently, Last Watch (not actually the final book).

When I first heard of the book "Saving CeeCee Honeycutt" I thought it was one of those chic books. Then I kept seeing it on the blogosphere and people were claiming it was very good. So, I saw it on the shelf at our local store, it was relatively short and the cover was pretty, so I bought it. Turns out, it IS really good! CeeCee is 12 and she has taken care of her mother who has slowly gone insane, for most of her young life while her father is absent most of the time. When her mother dies in a freak accident, CeeCee's Great Aunt Tootie comes to take her to Georgia. Aunt Tootie is a lovely woman and the most gracious female character I have ever read. She helps CeeCee adjust to a new city, buys her new clothes, and helps her work through her grief. Aunt Tootie has a housekeeper/cook named Oletta who teaches CeeCee a lot about life and takes her on a couple of great adventures. Aunt Tootie has a whole group of women-friends who take it upon themselves to save all the old family homes in Savannah when the city tries to have them torn down. Her neighbors are quite eccentric women, too. There are only 2 men in the whole novel -- one is CeeCee's father and the other is the policeman one of Tootie's neighbors is having an affair with. All the women have unique personalities and are very interesting in their own right let alone how the interact with CeeCee. This novel takes place in the 60's in Savannah, GA, so civil rights is a big issue. If you are interested in that time period, coming-of-age books, and the relationships between women, you will like this book as much as I did. Go pick it up -- and the cover is pretty!!!

Every time I come across something that hasn't been designed well (usually a door handle...), I think back to this book.

Tüm zamanların en sevdiğim kitaplarından biri Electric Kool-Aid, bu yüzden bunu kitapçılara çarptığı anda aldım. 1 yıldızın adil olup olmadığından emin değilim, çünkü kitabı hiç bitirmedim. Bitmemiş bıraktığım birkaç kitaptan biri olması bir yıldıza yol açtı. Bu kitabın düşüncesi beni biraz kızdırıyor! Gerçekten iyi olmasını istedim.
