Whoa. This book was emotionally draining and yet at the same time, very difficult to stop reading. The main characters are a father and his sixth grade son. I hate to think that the brutality the boy endures by classmates is remotely possible in today's schools, but I imagine it is probably true. The two of them are at a pivotal point in their lives and the reader really doesn't know until the end how they will survive it all. Very good, very sad.

I'm on the fence about this book. I liked the premise, but a lot fell flat. It was well paced. I liked the changes in Rhys and Elias. Rosalind was getting on my nerves. She was whiny and constantly finding fault with Christopher. Even up until the end, she was stubborn and annoying. I wanted to yell at Christopher through my kindle, just forget about her already! It really seemed at times that the only love and commonality they had between them was in the sack. Or the hay. There were too many secrets, a lot of double crossing, and distrust from every character. Too many times it seemed there were much simpler solutions to their problems, but they took the hard route, which was often never really explored to potential. The ending was too convenient. These factors made me not enjoy this book as much as the first. Too much happened to these characters in the span of a year, from where the first book left off. I would have like that explained more. Yet, despite all this I liked the book. Sometimes you need a book that is as aggregating as it is entertaining.

I love Reginald Hill anyway. His Daziel and Pascoe series is wonderful. This one is a stand alone. It's the story of a rich and powerful man who is accused of being a pediphile. He spends 7 yrs in prison, a large part of which he refuses to speak. A prison psychologist takes him on as a project hoping that by convincing him to accept his crime, he can be rehabilitated. This is really extraordinary in the writing, the setting and the characters. It is really riveting with so many turns and twists. I loved it!

Easily one of the best books I have ever read. MacCulloch tackles the monumental task of tracing a history of all of Christianity with clear prose, wit, and incredible intelligence. He begins 1000 years before the birth of Jesus, in order to create the context of the world into which he was born and how that context created Jesus as a person, his disciples, the general movement, and the reactions of the authorities. More importantly, he traces the history of the three major 'Churches': Latin (Western), (Eastern) Orthodox, and the Church of the East. The first two will be familiar to most, but the third covers a set of denominations that were predominant in the ancient Middle East, spread at an early stage all the way to China, and could very likely have ended up being the leading force in Christianity. While MacCulloch does a very good job of explaining the differences (often minuscule) between different denominations and sects, I still often found myself a bit confused on technicalities in doctrine and theology--especially when ideas or concepts resurfaced 500 pages later. That said, he almost always provides the page numbers when an idea or group was discussed, so it is possible to easily flip back and forth to refresh one's memory. Of course, the sections on the Latin Reformation period and the wars of religion is one of the clearest and best researched (The Reformation: A History). But, he does a great job of showing trends and differences in the history of Christianity across the Globe and through time. I was especially pleased with the time he spent on the Ethiopian Church. I would, though, have preferred if he could have spent more time on Latin America and Asia. Maybe, to make up for that, he could have spent a little less time on some of the 18th and 19th century movements in Europe and America. In the end, though, this is a monumental piece of scholarship that will easily be *the* general survey for years to come. MacCulloch has outdone himself here, and I for one look forward immensely to reading more of his work, and can't wait to see what he will be working on next.

This book is considered a classic and a television series was produced from it in the 1970's. The book was written in the 1930's and is not an easy read (which so many people today seem to prefer). But it does place readers into the mind of Claudius and give sthem details of Roman society after the time of Augustus. The Roman Republic is long dead. Augustus (Octavian, great nephew of Julius Caesar) ruled as Emperor for many years. His wife, Livia, was his confidante and was very much involved in politics. So much so that she helped "steer" her choices into the Emperor's seat after the death of Augustus. Multiple members of the royal family either died, were exiled or executed. Tiberias became Emperor. Then the mad Caligula. When he was overthrown (and assassinated) by conspirators from the military, a new Emperor was sought. Someone who would rule as a figurehead while the real powers behind the throne dictated the empire. Claudius was selected because it was widely assumed that he was a bumbling idiot who limped his way around the Palace and stammered every time he spoke. But behind his physical disabilities was a sharp mind. And so his story begins...

First Austen I've read. Some of it baffles me, but it's impressive how well it holds up. A bit difficult to decipher at times, but worth the effort.
