This was my favorite of all Jude Devereaux's books. It was intense and kept me reading til the end.

An enjoyable read, but one you must be willing to meet on it's own terms. You need to shape yourself to the way that Ochsner tells her tales - you can't expect them to fit more familiar shapes. I like the way a vague story builds at the hands of the various narrators. I like the multitude of references to other stories and myths and dreams within the book - it really does what the title claims. I like the gentle magic realism, and regular striking images that left me breathless. After reading her short story collection I said I was looking forward to what Ochsner might do with a a novel, and I wasn't disappointed. This novel is rambling and unwieldy at times - but just like the derelict building at the centre of the story it's faults are also it's beauty.

Harried from The Store to The Quarry -- humans return to destroy the Nomes new habitat, as well. Sequel manages to maintain the humorous, quirky touch of the first book.

This is our September book club book and while I didn't want to read it, once I started it, I couldn't put it down. Compelling and eye opening.

Such a beautiful book, very well written... although the ending surprised me :)

This story is about the life of Papp, Huckleberry Finn's miscreant father. I persevered in finishing the book. Clinch captures well enough the style of storytelling reminiscent of Mark Twain. His descriptions of the Mississippi River and from the period in which Huckleberry Finn is cast are interesting. There is not very much in the story itself which has a redeeming value. I guess I would have preferred that Clinch have left Twain's stories stand as he wrote them. Our society has progressed much farther and subdued the overtly racist attitudes portrayed in this book. (Thankfully). Maybe Clinch just wanted to finish Papp off himself to be through of him. My own opinion is that I do not see a need for the book.

Some really good stories (you know I loved the Christopher Pike story!), some that were too short but left me wanting more in a good way, and a few that were confusing or just ho-hum.

*SPOILERS* Passion was a big disappointment. Repetitive, boring, and predictable, it dragged and dragged for me. The author said it's the most romantic book, but basically it was just Luce watching all her past selves interact with a past Daniel. Even when she "cleaved" with herself, it was a past version of Daniel that she was talking to/kissing, so it didn't count. And that was the entire book! Another thing the author said: Passion explains everything. And that would be..what exactly? In one of the final chapters, it was explained exactly why Daniel and Luce are cursed. It took the whole book to get there, and I felt like we could've guessed the reason from hints throughout the series. And what was the end result of Luce's big quest? Oh, that she and Daniel love each other. I nearly threw the book across the room. If someone would like to help me out on all the amazing things we learned, please feel free, because I'm at a loss. We still don't know what/who Luce is and why Daniel fell in love with her; we don't know what's up with Cam, why he went for Luce in the first one. Those were some things I was reeally planning on finding out. And I wish we would've gotten to spend more time with the other angels! Arriane (a personal favorite), Gabbe, Roland, and yes, Cam. They all add some color, comic relief, and not to mention reality. Something Luce and Daniel are utterly devoid of. It is always talking about this amazing love that they have, but I just don't feel it. They seem to tell you, rather than show you, as a well written book does. And they are constantly talking about how all they want to do is kiss each other. So I felt like it was mostly lust, rather than real love. If it were real, true love, they'd be just as anxious to BE in each others presence, to just talk about life, rather than how "in love" they are. They are sorely lacking the friendship aspect, which makes it unrealistic and unbelievable. There was no plot, which is sometimes excusable if the characters are well developed, bright and interesting. Needless to say, they were not. Luce rivals Bella from Twilight with her utter whininess and self absorption. But this time, Daniel was equally self absorbed. The world literally doesn't expand beyond himself and Luce for him. Which is nice to an extent-this can come across as sweet and touching, etc. When it's done well. It wasn't the worst book I'd ever read. I did laugh a couple of times. I did swoon once or twice. But all in all, I found it very poorly written. I'm sorry if you liked it, I personally hate to read reviews bashing books that I loved. Will I read the final book? Right now I'm thinking definitely not, but we'll see how I feel later. Maybe I'll get bored enough.

The Graveyard Book is another example from the slightly bizarre, slightly dark, almost Roald Dahl-ish imagination of Neil Gaiman. Nobody "Bod" Owens grows up protected by a graveyard of ghosts and a guardian vampire, but he alone must battle the man who kills his family.

Yes, it's stupid and commercial, but I LOVE it. I just reread it for the nth time. It makes me laugh out loud. And I like the sappy movie too.
