** spoiler alert ** I must be educated. Who was it that said the mark of an educated mind was the ability to hold more than 1 idea in your head, without necessarily agreeing with it? Anyways, I've wanted to do the sequel to The Golden Compass for a long time. It was a quick read, which I both liked and did not like. Let's start out positively. Philip Pullman is a good writer. To me, it takes quite a bit of skill to create fantastic worlds and characters that sound absurd when you are talking about them, but are great when you read it (until the end stretches it a bit). For the most part, I enjoyed the continuation of the Golden Compass, the characters and the new worlds they are in. The point of the book, when you get to it, is both sort of exciting and disappointing. I knew Pullman was an athiest and this trilogy has been controversial, so a celestial war seems exciting. But I think, given the author's beliefs (or would it be a lack of belief?) that I already know who is going to win. The subtle knife can kill God? Not really buying that one. (Actually, if he is an athiest, how can there be a God to kill?) When a witch is killed, he writes, "Her last conscious thought was disgust at life; her senses had lied to her....Living was hateful, and death was no better, and from end to end of the universe this was the first and last and only truth." This probably best reflects Pullman's view, and I think it is a sad one. Be that as it may, it is his life and his writings....I only dabbled in it a bit. As fantasy, a good read and a good entry into the trilogy. As philosophy, or something "deep", not buying it. It would take a bit more than a fantasy trilogy to shake my deepest held beliefs.
