A 3.5 book. This did feel a little rushed but we got to see several iconic characters throughout this novel plus witness the creation of the sword of Shannara. I was a bit surprised there was no mention of the blue elf stones, however. They were in several novels chronologically before this one and are in sword itself...why no mention of them here when they appear so early in the next book? Overall, I probably liked it more than some of my friends because it is bringing mr back to the Shannara roots....

3.5 stars I liked this book, but it wasn't great. I read it for the art history/history, and in that sense, it was quite satisfying. I was in heaven reading about the works of art and artistic techniques, and Savonarola and the environment brought about by his preaching was well-established as fascinating, crazy times. However, the story as a whole was pretty "meh." I didn't like any of the characters, I felt none of the relationships were sufficiently developed, and the plot was too jumpy for my liking.

I really enjoyed reading about the topic of teen pregnancy from a teen father's point of view (especially a much more interesting and intuitive voice than that of the teen father in Nick Hornby's Slam). When you come to the "first part last" of the book, it really is heartbreaking to understand just how resilient Bobby is and has become from his experiences as a young father.

I'd say this is my favorite of the Darger books I've yet seen. Perfect. My favorite painter of the late 20th century by a landslide. Why is it so impossible to keep books on him in print and under $60? Many thanks to Baltimore's American Visionary Art Museum (THE best museum!) for showing his work some years ago, and basically changing me forever.
