I was young enough to have seen the movie before reading the book with this one. I was also young enough that when I did actually read it, I remembered the movie while reading the book and that kind of made for a super revved up pseudo-psychadelic childhood imagination type thing, which was cool.

The fact that she just sets down the fundamentals of the beginning of WWI allows you to get a handle on this important moment in time. Now, I want to read more, see photos and put faces to many of the names I was unfamiliar with before.

I should be finishing up school stuff for the semester... I have papers and a presentation due in the next week... but damnit, Game of Thrones just premiered on HBO, the new book comes out in July, and I have not read any of the books in 4 years! So of course I picked up book 4 two weeks ago, and that has dominated most of my past 14 days. I am not allowed to start rereading book 3 until early May, when most of the school stuff is finished. Also, if you have not read this series, and you like historical fiction (the premise of the books is loosely based on medieval history and the War of the Roses) and interesting characters and multiple complex storylines, and if you do not mind some fantasy (note: I am not a huge fantasy fan, but I LOVE this series), then GO READ THESE BOOKS NOW.

I have come to expect that SEP goes a little bit crazy after the halfway mark in her novels. Leaving the reader wondering as the logic takes a flying leap and you don't know how you got from one scene to the next. With this novel at least, I was pleasantly surprised. It was interesting and funny in parts, as well as providing interesting lead and supporting characters. The similarities to the well publicised Aniston/Pitt/Jolie debacle were obvious, but not disconcerting or overpowering once you know to expect it. Overall I liked it, and will breathe a little easier when I pick up another SEP book.
