My friend Rebekah recommended Barbara Pym on her blog recently, and as she is a sharp reader with exquisite taste, I had to discover Pym for myself. I had never even heard of Pym, but after reading Quartet in Autumn and Excellent Women I can see why some regard her as the most underrated British author of the 20th century. Quartet in Autumn tells the story of four retirement-age office mates in 1970s London. Marcia, Letty, Edwin, and Norman have little in common other than their shared office space, but the novel shows just how intertwined lives can become, even when the connections between individuals seem tenuous or artificial. All of the characters are unmarried (Edwin is a widower), and they face their autumn years alone together. One tragic situation in particular forces a closer acquaintance for the four, and while I don't want to spoil anything, I found myself both profoundly saddened and strangely hopeful after reading the book. Pym does a spectacular job of making four ordinary--sometimes truly odd--older people into intensely sympathetic characters.

This is one that I listen to each Christmas. MUCH MUCH better than the movie based on this book. I actually hated that they made a movie from it. I enjoyed the take on the Christmas festivities and the feel good ending.

The Diamond of Darkhold is the fourth book of ember and includes Lina and Doon returning to ember only to find squatters taken control of the city and have renamed it Darkhold. Lina and Donn escape and shut off the power forever. I think this was a great book but the first book of ember was my favorite.

Josie and Walker are back. In this second look at the pair we are taken to nowhere Texas, can I relate to that by the way, and Josie is unceremoniously introduced to a Stripper who is waiting to welcome Walker home. She then meets his friend Harry who likes to be called "Buck" and when you find out why you are going to laugh! Along with being out in the middle of no place Walker's functional but non glamorous abode does not have the amenities close by that poor Josie is used to, no Starbucks, no High Priced shopping Mall and worst of all no real night life scene. She does manage to find out why Texans swear by their food, in each place they go to chow down it is superb to say the lease. I think her favorite was the "Cowboy BBQ", I know mine was! All in all there is still a lot of fun going on with the characters, mishaps with poor Josie's shoes lead to a chuckle or two and the spotlighted shower scene will give you an all out laugh. I highly recommend this series, book 1 The Vampire Relationship Guide, Volume 1: Meeting and Mating introduced us to Josie and while she was interesting she was also kind of flighty, in book 2 The Vampire Relationship Guide, Volume 2: Secrets and Trust she is more grounded and at the same time still a hoot to keep up with the way her mind works. Fast light reading and just what I needed to keep me entertained, now since there was an abrupt ending to book 2 there better be another story released soon or my curiosity is going to make me explode!
