I think the best way to describe this book is as an unholy combination of Pride and Prejudice and Twilight. I will admit, I have read P&P more times than is healthy, so I like to think I know the characters relatively well. Indeed, most people who would read this book would have a fairly good idea of what these characters are like. That being said, I'm pretty sure the author picked Lizzy and Darcy to save herself the trouble of developing her own characters, and didn't really try to make her story fit with their established characters. I don't want to say the story is inherently bad, as different people enjoy different types of fiction, it just doesn't work with the characters so many people know and love. Also, the author's explanation about why Mr. Darcy is immune to the established vampire banes is novel but slightly ludicrous. And some parts of it are just plain illogical. If you're going to bastardize a classic piece of literature, at least pick one that no one actually reads, like Ulysses. Or Paradise Lost.

This book easily settles in as one of my favorites. It's one of those exploding, cascading, fountains of a book that makes you want to buy tons of copies and give them out for Halloween, or just leave them lying on the ground in strategic places hoping someone will pick it up. The frequent comparison to Don Quixote is apt, but it's got a bit of the swirling everything-comes-back-together-in-the-end feel of a Ken Kesey. It's a bit more good natured than that though, more like an episode of Seinfeld.

Reread this book for my classics group. Well written book that captures Holden Caulfield's turmoil and break down so well. I admire the writing and what the author has done, but I must say I found it totally exhausting to be in Holden's mind. It has definitely stood the test of time though. Well worth reading.

Lyrical and chilling. Bradbury is my favorite science fiction writer for how he knits the familiar and comforting with the unfamiliar and terrifying. I also appreciate how he doesn't neglect the emotions and humanity of his characters in favor of plot.

This is the second story in the series that started with Jacob: The Nightwalkers. I finished this one pretty quickly once I started it. I had to skim through a lot of detail about the different species in the book. At first, I thought I would never get to the story about the two main characters. The author must have felt she had to give the background from the first book to go on with her story. It would have been better to start the interaction then interweave the details into the story. But once it got rolling, it was good.

You should know that I will give every Brockmeier book 5 stars. You should also know that after I read one of his stories I curl my hands into fists of jealousy. His talent is huge and humbling.

One of my favorite aspects of Nightfall was its ability to be romantic, funny, and scary as hell — all in the same chapter. The storyline was solid, the tension tense, and the twist both heart-wrenching and inspiring. 5 tombstones, no question. Full review available here: http://www.bittenbybooks.com/42028/ni...
