I want to like Urusla K LeGuin. But this book was, simply put, bad. Boring story, slow moving plot when there was plot to speak of, and an anticlimactic, disappointing ending. Maybe I just wanted it to be Harry Potter.

I thought it was a good story. It was fairly predictable for me, but I still enjoyed it. It wasn't a book I "couldn't put down" but it still kept my interest. I'm sure I'll read the other books in the series, but I'm not in a huge rush to read them.

This book was fascinating for me to read because I grew up around both Patuxent River Navel Air Station and Edwards Air Force Base, where much of the book takes place. During my time at these two places I got to know several test pilots, and was attracted to the romantic nature of their profession. I also spent a lot of time at the Air and Space Museum in Washington DC when I was kid.

This is getting a little dated, but it is packed with interesting statistics, still relevant today, about overconsumption by the developed world as compared with the underconsumption by the poorest nations. Puts things in perspective, and reminds us about American consumerism.

This book does so much to you in one read, that I had to give it 5 stars, although I am somewhat embarrassed to do so, given the graphic nature of the book. As others have said, it is a solid social commentary of the 1980's. The book has a way of making each of the major influences that drive the story and bind it together seem to be both a driving force and ancillary backdrop all at the same time.
