I've read this book so many times that I actually feel I can't write an objective review of it. However, I will say this - the first Harry Potter book was a part of my reading library for maybe four or five years before I actually gave it a fair shot. I remember reading the first chapter and then putting it down the very first time I tried to get through Sorcerer's Stone. The Dursleys didn't interest me and I really had no interest in what else was to come after Vernon's weird day at work. But, among the fervor for the release of Goblet of Fire, and after being abandoned by almost all of my college friends the weekend it was released so that they could hide away reading about the tournament, I realized I might be missing out on something phenomenal. As it turns out, I was! My initial feeling of not really wanting to read the rest of the book is the reason for the four-star review. Once I made my way through it, I thought the book was quite brilliant, obviously. As it's book one, the writing is a little un-polished, Harry and his pals are very young, and the plot is maybe a little simple. But, as Harry matures, so do the books. If you've been hesitating about becoming a Potter-phile, stop it and give it a chance. You've nothing to fear, now, since all the books are out! There's no worry of suffering a two or three year wait for the next sequel.

It's actually 3.5 It started out very slow, until about halfway where i was ready to put it down for good. But I continued on and am glad I did, because it became much more exciting and had a great climax.

I have read the taught this book so many times now and every time I do I find something new and wonderful about it. It is of course, a great way to study mid-century American religious history, which is why I teach it, but my secret is that I include it in my classes because I like reading it again and again. Day's commitment to social justice and self sacrifice is obviously inspirational and particularly relevant at the moment, but her articulation of her religious struggles is what keeps me devoted to this text. Even though as a Jew, I can't really relate to her Christ-centered worldview, her writing has so much to offer anyone who has ever wrestled with what God demands of us, and with what we, in turn, demand from Her/Him.

Captivating, a real nailbiter. Lots of twists and unsuspecting circumstances build into one powerhouse of a story. The writing style is unique and hidden clues are sprinkled into the sentences. Character names are hard to pronounce, but who reads aloud anyway. Elisabeth Salander is an unforgettable force. The plot is unusally structured and at times I found myself thumbing back through the pages to reaquaint myself with one or two of the characters. This is a pageturner, one that kept me reading until the wee hours of the night. There are two more books that follow this one which I intend to read.

Another entertaining book in the Janet Evanovich's bounty hunter series. A fast read, the latest adventure of Stephanie Plum is very amusing.

So I'll just admit I'm a sucker for short stories. There's something about such small windows into life that gets me every time, and for a truly excellent writer, I always marvel at how they managed to pack so much character, so much feeling into a mere few pages. This is one of those collections. Alethea Black is more in touch with the human soul than most. Almost every single story in this collection touched me to my core, even when it was Ms. Black's hilarity rather than her sadness. The stand outs for me: "That Of Which We Cannot Speak", "Good in a Crisis", "The Summer Before", "Mollusk Makes a Comeback", "Double-Blind" and of course, probably my favorite, "Someday is Today." Every one of these stories flutters with an originality and heartbeat all its own, whether it's Ms. Black explaining a gathering of nerds or the longing and desperation of a 20-something for a purpose. I also enjoyed that the book felt tied together by a singular theme of characters trying to decide something large and possibly life altering, or looking back with hindsight on such a decision. I think it's hard sometimes to see those decisions when they're coming in your own life, and so it's always rewarding to see someone who has managed to confront those moments with such authenticity. Read this book when you're sad to know that you're not alone. Read this book when you're happy to simply experience a few revelatory moments of the human experience.
