Quite a surprise. I don't "DO" science fiction. But I had to read this in college in my English class. I LOVED it. Once I started, I couldn't put it down. Excellent.

I didn't want this book to end! I found Julia and many other people in this book to be so endearing. Julia's zest for life and unquenchable appetite for food and learning new things was so infectious! I kept turning the pages to find out what would happen next. I loved her cheerfulness and positivity and her attention to detail. She could go on and on about the simplest of things. Also, her relationship with Paul was so genuine and loving. What a team they made! I had a huge lump in my throat when this book and their time was coming to an end. But it seems to me that they lived more of a life than most of us would in two lifetimes! Paul's work took them to Paris, Germany, Norway and back and forth to the East Coast. They ate many things, experienced many cultures and met many people along the way, most of whom they would become life long friends with. This book was about the creation and writing of Mastering the Art of French Cooking (Vols. I & II), but I think it was mostly about The Child's wonderful marriage and partnership and the amazing life they led.

This book has everything: sexy nurses, penises being bitten off, a movie adaptation starring Robin Williams, John Lithgow and Glenn Close, and so much more. It's funny, smart, and self-aware. Read the first ten pages and see if you're not hooked.

I wasn't charmed completely by this book. There were definitely some nice moments in it and I liked some of the techniques that Annie used as a medium. My main complaint is that the book is too ethereal in the narrative style, it's like 229 pages of exposition, I never felt like I was present for any of the action really, not until right and the end and maybe that was Slavin's intent. I can certainly see why she would aim for this fragile kind of feel to it, Annie as a character is certain very fragile and I don't think that's a bad thing, I actually liked her quite a bit as the protagonist but the insubstantial narrative really undermined a lot of the writing for me. Especially when the 'mystery' surrounding her husband is actually revealed, I felt no impact. In the end this isn't a book I would recommend to other people, I read it because I am fascinated by mediums and spiritualism personally, I just think it's a really interesting, spooky subject and this novel just didn't live up to its own potential for me.

Unlike Rose Beranbaum's other books, some of these recipes have failed me. Or--more likely-- I've failed them. Either way, I learned a lot from this book and I would recommend it to anyone interested in baking breads, but only in conjuntion with Peter Reinhart's Bread Baker's Apprentice and Crust & Crumb. She admits to being a bread novice when she started writing this book, which has the benefit of allowing her to walk you through techniques that someone with more experience may take for granted. Read Beranbaum for her detail, then Reinhart for his mastery, and you'll be one badass breadman.

Jakob Von Gunten is better, but this is good too. Maybe start here? I go back and forth whether this should get 4 or 5 stars. 4 1/2?

I read this in one sitting! It is truly a lovely story about family. A rich old lady who lives in a mansion and the poor caretaker of her property who was from the wrong side of the tracks. The caretaker finds a newborn baby in a cardboard box on the steps to the garage. The story reveals a little at a time, a bit about these two main characters and how they come to raise this abandoned baby!
