1977 Newbery Medal Winner Cassie Logan and her family live in rural Mississippi during the Depression where they must struggle to remain one of the lucky few land-owning black families. As the Logans and their acquaintances are attacked and demeaned by the majority of the whites in the community, Cassie finds that she must grow up all too quickly in order to understand the racism around her. I found it difficult to get into this book--the story started out very slow, focusing on Cassie and her siblings, and gradually became more intense as Cassie became aware of the adult problems around her. Maybe the author wrote it that way intentionally as at first, Cassie's parents tried to shield her more from the harshness of the world. The whole, complex issue of racism that this book brings up is very poignant, and at times, uncomfortable. I couldn't blame the Logan kids for wanting to take vengeance against their tormentors such as Lillian Jean, for example, especially in light of society constantly forcing them into such humiliating positions. At the same time, I felt that maybe Taylor was trying to show how taking revenge can reduce a person to the tormentor's level, and how racism poisons a whole culture. Even whites who tried to be friends with the Logans were treated with suspicion from them, and hatred from other whites. Bridging the gap after that much pain and mistrust takes a lot of time, and extraordinary people. As the plot ramped up to its inevitable conclusion, the suffering to which Southern black people have been subjected came into sharp focus, and the injustice was complete.
