What a beautifully told story! As I started the first chapter I was afraid I wouldn't be able to handle the writing style. I tend to read pretty quickly and it didn't allow me to do that. But after a while I began to embrace that and I loved the overall "feel" of the book. The characters were incredibly endearing -- there were some you loved and others you loved to hate. The story made me laugh out loud, shed tears of joy AND sadness, made me angry, and made me hopeful. It's truly a remarkable book that can do that.

Expected this to be about basketball and perhaps race. It is about both of these things, but it is also so much more. The book taps into some of the biggest issues and is written in a manageable style that reluctant readers can handle. It takes several turns that I wasn't expecting, and by the final page I was sniffing back a lump in my throat. I'll be offering this to fans of Carl Deuker or Rich Wallace, and thoughtful guys who can take on a book about friendship and fate and redemption.

Similar to Dunant's The Birth of Venus, but Gregory has her own unique style of telling a tale. Amazing how much historical research the author did to write this novel well, and you can actually feel the sense if frustration and entrapment that this woman feels throughout this novel.

This book kept coming up, so I was really curious to read it! Two cousins, living in 19th century England, become penfriends as one is in London for the Season and the other had to stay behind at the family home on the countryside. Magic runs in the family and even if they didn't have a proper training, they start getting involved in order to help each other through the problems that show up. It's a fun book, written by two women (each took a character) playing a Letter Game.

This is a rather amazing book from an author known for fantasy books. Based on a true story of an expedition in the 1800's to find the NW passage that disappears, Simmons builds his own world for the lost sailors that consists of 100 below zero temps, unseen monsters, and life aboard a ship frozen in the artic. I'll truly never look at winter in Minn the same way again.
