Had to quit reading after a certain point. Fucking journalists know nothing of brevity.

Not quite as good as the first one but still hard to put down. I await the third one anxiously

I love words, language and letters. This was a good story about the powers of l"letters" alone, combined into words, and language. It is interesting to note that the story was also told through letters, as in "Dear Ella". The story was also thought provoking for me with our current political climate. Made me think!

I like the show better. My mother bought me this book for christmas thinking it was the first one in the series. It was ok. It got better in the end but it could be a bit of a drag with all the anthropology jargin.

Take a deep breath before diving into this book because you are going to need it. The action starts right from the beginning with hardly a pause for a breath before diving right into the next action scene. In my review of Mr. Strout's first Simon Canderous novel, "Dead to Me", I stated that this was an author with promise. In this second outing I have not been disappointed. The characters are well developed and the dialogue flows. I would recommend these books to anyone who is a fan of the urban fantasy, paranormal, action, adventure genre.

This book is not a spectacular read. Its plot would be unsustainable were it not for George Eliot's piercingly brilliant insights into human nature, which hang extraneously on its uneventful narrative. Unlike Middlemarch, the web of characters in this novel is perfunctory, and altogether rather unsympathetic and uninteresting. Although you witness the long lives of the characters, you never feel as if you have aged with them as you do in her later novels. The ending is a bit like the ending of Scarface -- either you love it and it redeems the work, or you hate it and the work fails. I'm in the former camp, as I didn't mind the deus ex machina as much as some other people seem to. I saw it not as Eliot facilely giving up on an irretrievable plot, but more like the analogous biblical event, with Eliot as the God of her characters (intentionally vague to avoid spoiling it). If you loved Middlemarch it's worth a look, but I was a little disappointed. I still have a great respect for George Eliot's dazzling prose, but the story isn't great in this case.
