Am Tan is a thoughtful writer and an interesting woman. She has a unique way of exploring mother daughter relationships. I think this was one of my favorites of hers, but I would need to re-read to say exactly why. I think it was the historical component that hooked me. I read this a while ago and just stumbled upon a paperback copy, for free. I remember liking the book- not to the point of ecstasy, that my friend who recommended it did, but thought, all in all, it was not an unpleasant way to spend a few evenings. (Unlike a recent book I read that had me stomping and grumbling about how I actually wasted a weekend reading the book- which some people have had lifechanging experiences after reading. It's not that I objected to the plot, or the theology, or the stretching of facts, or anything like that- I just found this particular book POORLY WRITTEN!!! Enough of a rant on another best seller. Sorry. If anyone actually reads this note and wants to know which book, PM me.)

i'm hard pressed to describe the storyline of the book in a paragraph. all i can say with confidence is that the movie doesn't do it justice. you'll laugh, you might cry, but when all is said and done you'll wear a content smile.

I read this book when I was 11 and a half, and didn't think much of it...but it stayed in my head and I thought about it a lot, then about a year later I realised how beautiful it was and it made me cry. It's a very personal work, the author wrote this in response to the sudden death of her 8-year-old son's best friend. I hope the adaptation does it justice.

September 2013 update: A very sad epilogue to a galvanizing story.

This was a great first novel by Oliver Potzsch, though you can definitely tell he's a screenwriter. He chose a great topic - his family history. There seemed to be a lot of time spent running between the various locales in Schongau and describing the same feelings (e.g. the metallic taste in the young physician's mouth when running), which dragged this novel on farther than it should, but the book was thoughtfully-written and characters were well-developed. The only question is why the book was titled "The Hangman's Daughter" when the book was much more about the Hangman and Physician's son.

This was a fun book. Nothing too earth shattering. Reinforces the need for people to study economics and not just make decisions with their feelings.

I'm counting this as two books for my yearly tally. This particular volume is two novels in one. Both are noir-but-not-really mysteries involving an alternate universe where dinosaurs survived the mass extinction and now live dressed as humans among the rest of us. The lead character is a velocirapter PI. Both books have mysteries that are well-crafted and have surprising turns. I thoroughly enjoyed both, which is saying a lot considering I found the book for $5 on the bargain table at B&N.

Mann does a top-notch job of telling the story about the pre-Columbian Americas whose two primary civilizations (Mesoamerica and the Andes) developed in isolation from the rest of the world (and, likely, in isolation from each other), and that these civilizations may have rivaled in time and sophistication the civilizations in the Near East, Egypt, India and China. On this point, he writes that "When the people of Notre Chico [Andes] were building these [their] cities, there was only one other urban complex on earth: Sumer." His history is a much appreciated correction to the standard histories of the world. In referencing one such history, Mann notes the nine pages that were allotted to pre-Columbian America and states that "The thesis of the book in your hands is that Native American history merits more than nine pages." In this history, Mann fills in many of our gaps, including the role of disease in wiping out native populations. He also presents alternative perspectives so that the reader is far less sure about our standard understanding on such things as the origin of the Olmecs, the overkill hypothesis, the migration dates and origins of the New World's native peoples, the origin of maize, and the role of slash and burn technology in the Amazon. Here and there, Mann gives his own perspective and position on these issues after a fair presentation of the evidence. While the Americas have been isolated from the rest of the world, Mann notes that Columbus seamed Pangaea together again. Mann's book helps to bring the story of the Americas into the mainstream of world history.
