i liked this book mainly for the perspective it gave me on depression. i'd recommend it to anyone who knows someone who's clinically depressed, or who has felt depressed themselves.

As always Dillard grabbed my attention from the get go. This story was filled with good humor and not so much gruesome horror as the last ones I read, but it was still an excellent read as far as I'm concerned. Unlucky in Death was far less polished than some of the others I've read, but nothing that really interfered with readability so I can't complain. Here's a quick rundown- David has been turned into a vampire and isn't really handling it well. In fact, he's decided to see a shrink. He misses his old life of waking up early and enjoying the sun, and eating Italian, because, dammit, he loves garlic! But all that has changed now, and worst of all, he's terrified of blood. Just thinking about it makes him pass out, poor guy. So what is a vampire to do? Get high, apparently. Thankfully, Bob, his creator slash surfer dude slash bum, has his back. I had a fun time reading this and I can't wait to read more of Dillard's creations. He truly is a great writer.

This was a cute novel about what it would be like to win the lottery on the worst day of your life. Amusing and hard to put down.

I read this quickly. It's very raunchy and prurient. Lots of slave/master stuff going on here; even some water sports. Edmund White has had a fascinating life and, as usual, his descriptions are superb. He can be cynical and self-deprecatory by turns, but he compensates for this with frequent surprising insights. Every gay men should read him, but every one else can spice up their sex lives and learn some gay history by reading this.

I received this book for review from the author. I did not receive any compensation for my review, and the views expressed herein are my own. I read this book aloud to my children. I love the name of the rabbit, Howard B. Wigglebottom. It's cute, it's funny, and accurately describes my kids who can't seem to sit still! Howard gets taken to the principal's office at school because he does the wrong things when he does not get his way. Even when he returns home, he is still in a time-out. Howard's friend, Ali, stops by. He asks her why she doesn't get angry, and she tells him that she does just like everyone else. She said that her tummy gets all tight when she doesn't get her way and that she tells herself to "Stop; it's OK to back away," before she does the wrong thing. Then, Ali goes out and does something to feel good again, such as; jumping, kicking or throwing a ball, yelling, or counting. With Ali's help, Howard learns to redirect his anger. We, too, do time-outs in our household for inappropriate behaviour and that includes when they are having a tantrum. The kids are more than welcome to rejoin the household once they have cooled off. I agree with the "back away" aspect of the book's lesson. In the suggestions for lessons and reflections at the back of the book, Binkow suggests listening to our tummies which might feel "tight or shaky or upset." That part of the lesson was a little hard for my kids to grasp, especially my 3 year-old. Speaking for myself, I don't generally get an upset tummy when I'm angry. Rather, my heart gets pumping and my face usually gets red! We see a different side of Howard in this book. In the previous one we read (Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns About Mud and Rainbows), we see Howard as more of a "hero." In this one, Ali is the "hero" and Howard is the one that needs her help. I love that Binkow shows the "give-and-take" of the friendship between Howard and Ali and that nobody (not even cute Howard B. Wigglebottom) is perfect! My kids really like Cornelison's illustrations. My 3 year-old especially got a kick out of seeing Howard's angry "Ninja Bunny" face. Overall, I really liked this book but not as much as the other Binkow book that we just read (Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns About Mud and Rainbows). One thing in particular that I really like about this series is that it stimulates further discussion with my kids *after* we have read the book. Any book that does that gets my thumbs-up! Although this is Book #5 of the series, each story is independent and can be read out of order. MY RATING: 4 stars!! We really liked this book and recommend it!

If I had a top five, this book would definitely be in it for my favorite novels of all time. It fits in with my dual interest in both prep school and coming-of-age books, which I'm sure must say something about me, though I'll refrain from self-psychoanalysis here. Suffice to say I was extremely moved by this book, I have several copies, and whenever I see a new version in a bookstore I feel compelled to buy it, as if owning just the one copy doesn't do it justice somehow. Holden's struggle with the intangible line between adolescence and adulthood, all the while with no one to look after him, immortalizes the struggle everyone must make when facing adulthood. Yet Salinger makes it so much more than that, and I'd like to re-read the novel again as an adult.

It was an interesting book. The story was fairly easy to follow, as long as you could keep straight that Zenia was lying the majority of the time, but that didn't make it boring. I found the last section a bit boring, however, and thought it would have been better if they had tied it off without all those extra pages. Nevertheless, I will more than likely read the book again and it was worth more than the 4 dollars I paid for it.

I have fond memories of reading THE ZERO STONE and other Andre Norton in my teens and when I stopped off at used bookstore in San Clemente, CA, and found a batch of old Andre Norton paperbacks, it was fun to grab this one and drive right in - I'd have given another star if it felt like the writing had a less dashed off feel, but the story-telling vibrates with that winning Andre Norton combination of brisk adventure (I was often eager to turn the page to find out what would happen next), simple but winning characters, at least the two main characters, who communicate telepathically, and thumb-scratching what-if big-picture imaginings. I'd recommend this to any fan of Andre Norton.
