Skvěle vystavěná detektivka se zajímavými postavami, která se čte jedním dechem.

I had the great pleasure of meeting Marguerite at the Emirates Festival of Literature in Dubai earlier this year and read her book in preparation for her session. The story about her life was interesting and unique, but found that the book lacked emotions. Being from Europe and married to an Arab myself, I would have loved to find out more about her feelings, as well as about how she raised their kids, and even her every-day struggles as she came from a totally different background. I admire Marguerite for her strong love, that really conquered all, in the end leaving behind her modern life to live in the caves of Petra with the man who captured her heart.

** spoiler alert ** Mad spoilers ahead. You've been warned. I...I haven't made my mind up yet on this one. I was so super excited to finally get my hands on it, but I think it fell a little flat for me. Don't get me wrong, I didn't dislike it, and I'll be waiting not-so-patiently for the final installment with the rest of you. But (and please, die-hard fans, don't rip me to shreds over this) I think the following are what didn't work for me: - it was a bit slow paced at times. It didn't give me the same heart-pounding, tearing-through-the-pages sensation that Delirium did. Probably because it was kind of formulaic in what has come to be the norm of the YA dystopian sequel: protagonist learns of a resistance to the ruling order, protagonist joins the resistance, infiltrates the ruling order...you know the rest. It was, at times, quite similar to some other sequels I've come across. - Julian. Oh man, where do I start. Damn you Lena for falling for him! I mean, I get that you thought Alex was dead and moved on and all, but...Alex! I didn't want a love triangle! It's also the mark of many a YA dystopian and it drives me nuts! I understand the intense conflict and tension it creates, but it's been done...and done...and done. Which brings me to... - Alex. Alex. Alex. Alex. I felt like each time I turned the page, I was waiting...and waiting...and waiting for him to reappear. And when he FINALLY did, it's in the worst possible situation. If there's anything worse than him dying, it's him returning bitter and resentful towards Lena. Wahhh. -Finally, I found the encounter (and later, realization) between Lena and her mother quite anticlimactic and a little hard to swallow. Your mother hasn't seen you in 12 years but doesn't give herself away? This is a woman who escaped from prison from carving out the word love over and over in stone! Gah. Although, I realize the author is probably setting us up for a dramatic reunion in the final book. This isn't to say the book on the whole didn't work for me, just some of the elements. There were some pretty cool new characters, quite an impressive expansion of the original setting, and some intense situations for which I applaud the author from not shying away, like the bitter realities of living in the Wilds. Overall, not perfect, but there wasn't enough I disliked to turn me away from the series (get real, I HAVE to find out what happens) or the author. It's gonna be a painful road ahead in book 3, my friends.

Chefs have long been telling their story through recipes. Anthony Bourdain told his story through antics, and spared no expense. Kitchen Confidential is his story, and because he told it, things are different.
I don't get it. Am I less of an American for not loving this book? A good, interesting read. But I felt that the last third or so of the book was just reiterating the same parties, the same aimlessness of the first part, and left me wondering whether Sal was really changing. Talking about it in class helped, relating Sal and Dean's journey to traditional "quest" narratives made it more interesting for me. But I'm still the same person I was before I read this book. No Beat-style epiphanies. Bummer.

I didn't like the ending at all. I listened to this book on my ipod while I worked so maybe I wasn't able to focus on it correctly. I guess the ending was supposed to be shocking by Victorian standards. However Henry James clearly seemed to know every word in the English language! It was a very well worded story.

I like these little snippets into VT life, makes me yearn to visit New England. He has a lovely writing style, almost feels like fiction, the characters and situations are brimming with vitality. I liked it.

one of the few novels that I’ve reread again and again. I love this novel so much that I’ve bought all the copies that I happen to find and gave it to friends. It is not only a criticism of present-day capitalism by way of science fiction but also a description of what an alternative system could look like. Despite particular limitations, the novel kindles hope among its readers for an alternative to the exploitative world capitalist system as exemplified by the imaginary planet of Urras. The Dispossessed certainly points to the fictional world of Anarres as an image of the communist future. Continue Reading
