Rather predictable, but still charming. 4.5 stars.

I definitely enjoyed this book more than the first. Quinn's character still gave me some issues. Jess and Lorcan moving back to the area in the beginning of the book after a year gave some realism to the story. The year gave the two some time to grow and change and moving back was a logical move. The writing was still good and the plot development smooth and logical. The situation with Jess, yes, Jess should have handled better but to me it made Jess's character more real. He is only human. Overall this was a better book for me than the first. Except for Quinn's quick attitude change the relationships and character interactions made sense in the course of the story.

I read Cloud Atlas first as it's definitely the most hyped and thus read of Mitchell's novels. Ghostwritten and Cloud Atlas both consist of novellas that essentially stand alone from each other, with minor linkages between each story. One could actually read a story from Ghostwritten, put it on the bookshelf, then pick it up a couple of weeks later and read the next story. The central theme that Mitchell explores throughout Ghostwritten is the relationship between fate and free will. Each story has a central character, with each being subject to the whim of the powers that be. Some of the characters act as their own agent to a greater extent than others in the face of those powers. Mo in the Clear Island story acts of her own accord to a greater degree than Quasar in the first story Okinawa. From this I thought Mitchell was trying to portray the idea that there will always be things out of one's control in any given situation, but one's actions will have an influence on how they fare upon the resolution of that situation. All analytical interpretation aside though, Ghostwritten is a joy to read, with Mitchell having a wonderful ability to portray a wide array of characters.

WORST BOOK EVER narrated by a terribly annoying character, the whole story is just BAD and terribly written. do NOT bother!

Unfortunately confirms my worst impressions of Naples as a city of tiresomely pervasive corruption. Sort of interesting exploration of how organized crime has adapted to globalization perhaps more successfully than legitimate business, but not exactly a gripping read. Maybe something got lost in translation.

had the honor to meet the author in her home which she built on the grounds of the hospital she founded in addis and had it signed. as a little girl i read a newspaper article about the hamlins and the fistula hospital and it was the spark which lit a fire under me that medicine - obstetric medicine - and global public service were for me. it was like coming full circle an indescribable experience

Great follow up to the first book! The characters got even deeper in this book. I'd give the same cautionary warning about occasional graphic parts that I gave for the first book in this series. Can't wait to read the last book! It's definitely a bummer these were published posthumously.

An excellent collection, centered around "Sweat" and "Gilded Six-bits" with some essential criticism included. Check it out from the library and read these stories. They're two of Hurston's finest and provide a curious balance together.

This book is not only absolutely fascinating, it is extremely well written. Ken Mansfield is a master wordsmith in addition to a former record executive that happened to have worked very closely with the Beatles. His insider perspective on one of the world's most popular and influential bands is truly unique. A very enjoyable read. I had an opportunity to have Ken Mansfield as a guest on my radio show, "Divine Intervention." He was able to tell his story of coming to faith in Christ, his miraculous healing from cancer, and his story about working with the Beatles. He was a great interview, and very interesting.
