I almost never give 5-star reviews unless I personally know the author or truly love the book. This book made me fall in love not only with Voltaire, but also with this time period. This is such an amusing read and even almost 250 years after it was written, it's still as entertaining as it probably was the first day it was published. Voltaire is a gem and one of the reasons I love philosophy passionately.

Herbert's Dune Chronicles is right next to Asimov's Foundation series and it is good. Much like the Foundation #5, it follows another great timeskip and gives a broader view of humanity and a closer one of, here, the Bene Gesserit. It wasn't as entertaining as the first, and the leaps between different times can be annoying. It depends on the focus. I read this at the time when I was very interested in specific characters and continuity, which one can find in the first three books, rather than in the last three. Outside of that, there is mystery, sex, space adventures and intrigue, philosophical bits - a matter of personal taste, in the end.

Romance. Quinn McKenzie's got a good job, a good boyfriend, and a good head on her shoulders, but when she takes in a stray dog she realizes her boyfriend's not as good as she thought. In fact, he's a jerk. So she leaves him and starts looking at her best friend Nick with new, sexy eyes. I've read this before, but I'd forgotten just how damned creepy and upsetting the ex-boyfriend is. I've read novels with serial killers who were less menacing. But this guy's just so dogged and matter-of-fact with his stalking. It's discomforting and, for me, taints the romance a little because I was so creeped out by the ex-boyfriend I couldn't fully enjoy the new boyfriend. This is one of Crusie's older, transitional novels where she starts adding more mystery and intrigue and family dynamics into her standard romance plot. It's obvious she's still working out the kinks in this new approach. I would have liked her to spend more time establishing the Quinn/Nick friendship before turning them into a couple. We're told they're best friends who speak every day, but we don't see that, and since I love a story where best friends fall in love, it would have been a lot more satisfying for me if I could have seen that happening. But this is still a pretty solid romance -- the sexual tension is drawn out, the sex itself gets a little metaphorical but is mostly grounded in the physical, and since Nick is Quinn's ex-brother-in-law (from years and years ago) there's a nice element of the forbidden.

An engrossing read although a bit slow at times. Some very nice sf ideas played out on a galactic scale. Having just read Accelerando (Charles Stross) I do wonder why there are still flesh & blood people flying around the galaxy. Seems a bit 1990's tech if you ask me.

Haunting and deeply morally insightful treatment of the mechanics of every day life in a police state, and its morally corrupting effect on its inhabitants.

** spoiler alert ** The book had WAY TOO MANY pages. Basically, Diana & Mathew go back in time to the 16th century and accomplish nothing. They make some guy named Thomas invent a telescope and or take credit for it. They meet Phillippe in France, Matt's dad, not to be confused with other characters named Philip. Diana gets married to Matthew for reals this time, and they finally shag. In England, she takes in a homeless kid named Jack. She also gets pregnant, loses the baby, then gets pregnant again because, HEY! It's Elizabethan England! Then at the very end we find out it's twins! How glorious. They don't even get the Ashmole 782 so their going back in time was useless. Except for the fact that Diana met 1,230 witches that help her learn her craft of magic. Oh, and she meets her dead dad who is busy time weaving himself and then he leaves her without saying goodbye and she's all wah wah wah. Pretty much this was a waste of my time. It should have been 350 pages.

This book is fantastic! I finished it in a day and a half. I couldn't put it down! Jodi captured the relationship dynamics flawlessly. This is probably my favorite book of hers that I've read and that saying a lot b/c i ADORED Keeping Faith. I hope this sheds some light on things that people didn't understand before. Love, and let Love. I Highly recommend this book!

OH MY GOD SOMEONE PLEASE RESCUE THIS BOOK! I DON'T HAVE IT HERE, BUT I LIKE KNOWING I CAN AT LEAST LOOK AT IT HERE ON GOODREADS.COM!!! NOOOOOOO somehow montambo made me think of this book earlier, and i had to go search out its picture, but here it is!! this book is great because that dog in the foreground is covered in this fur that isn't really nice soft fur, but is short stiff bristly fur that isn't comforting but gives you shivers all over especially if you, like, scratch at it. i saw this book at the supermarket when i was little and had such fun grossing myself out with the fur i had to beg my mom to buy it for me. and she did.
