What an eye-opener. Just when you think the story can't get more unbelievable, it does. All the while, you're shocked and distressed to remind yourself that it's a memoir, not fiction. This was a book club pick and stimulated all sorts of interesting discussion. I highly recommend it.

*A Myth Retold* This timeless tale of two princesses; one beautiful and one unattractive and of the struggle between sacred and profane love is C. S. Lewis's reworking of the classical myth of Cupid and Psyche and one of his most enduring pieces of fiction. This book was "fascinating" in it's own special way. And yet I also found it... confusing... at times. The story takes place in Glome and is written by Orual, the eldest daughter of Trom, the King. She is Psyche's embittered and ugly older sister and possessively and harmfully loves Psyche. In a way it's her personal biography... Her life was sad, hard, and confusing. I felt she was lost in so many different ways. She (and the others in the land) worshiped and revered these gods who seemed cruel and barbaric at times. The people were bound up in senseless traditions and rituals. The whole world there was such a sad, pitiful existence. The struggles between sacred and profane love are illuminated as Orual learns that we cannot understand the intent of the gods "till we have faces" and sincerity in our souls and selves. I could identify with Orual on several different levels... I used to be far more selfish and concerned with myself to the point that I was unaware of the sufferings and hurts of those around me. And how I was causing them grief.... After reading another person's review, I feel I understand the underlying message better now and might want to read this book again to really grasp it. I had read it in such short spurts here and there that I really didn't understand it all to the point I should have. (I feel so dense!) Overall, it was an interesting book... a journey I had never experienced before.

Loved, loved, loved it!!! Another "vacation bookstore" recommendation that I wasn't interested in at first and could find nothing better that wasn't deep, dark & depressing. Turned out to be one of my favorite books ever. What a "novel" idea, to take such an iconic American literature figure and create a history for her. Just great!

Opal discovers that her making of glass messengers is not the only skill she has magic-wise. The one she discovers is much more potent and raises the question to the Council about how dangerous she just could be. Add in her new love interest Ulrik, suddenly becoming a bit strange and soon finding out he has switched bodies with Devlan thanks to blood magic - the man who tortured her. Only Devlan claims to be different and keeps popping up, trying to help Opal. Ulrik, on the other hand, seems magic-thirsty and cruel when Opal finally tracks him down. The problem is, no one will believe her story. Add in Kade, Opal's real apple of her eye and you've got some serious love interest. There's a lot of political intrigue in this book as well, adding in the factor of who will convince Opal to sell her products through them and monopolize on the glass messengers. I kept putting this book down, knowing that the third isn't due out until 2011. *sigh* More than a year!!! Opal gets a little more jaded in this book. I'm starting to like Devlan.. I think Kade may have some serious competition in the future. :) If you haven't, you guys need to read all of Maria V. Snyder's books. They are amazing.

This has been on my to-read list for nearly ten years. I don't remember how I heard of it - I recorded nothing about my reason for listing it. Clearly, however, I'd seen a review, or a friend had recommended it (probably the former, as I'm more likely to have noted a person). What a pleasure this book was to read. I so enjoyed getting to know Margaret, the biographer and whose voice this book is written in. I so enjoyed being appalled at the inhabitants of Angelfield House. I so enjoyed the mysterious character of Vida Winter, 'the world's most famous living author'. The interconnections, the gradual unfoldings, the clues .... The fabulous descriptions of a house becoming derelict and a garden untended ... I was totally caught up in this novel!

Well written, and seems to be well researched as far as history goes. It's obvious Brooks loves books, and the stories she creates for the Sarajevo haggadah are wonderful. Each is just a slice of history, and we are often left wondering what happened to the characters after we leave them. Sometimes these questions are answered, but more often they are not, which is often how history goes.
