I just reread this book, and found myself disappointed in the ending. We go through all that, ALL THAT in a long book, and then we are given, what, two paragraphs to tell us that they live happily ever after? No. I tell you what, no. After all that pining we had to listen to Edmund do for Mary, I want at least a little bit of that romanticness directed toward Fanny. Come on, the poor girl. Give her something!

Wow!! I know everyone raved about this book, but I wasn't prepared for quite how good it would be. I was sucked in right from the start. I read it in 4 days, but I'm sure if I'd had more time I would have read it in 1 or 2. On to book 2!!

Can't wait to read the first one - The Rossetti Letters. I should have read them in order, but oh well. Still very good. I just love these books told in two time periods. Plus this was historical fiction so I feel like I'm getting a bit smarter while doing something I love - reading:)

This guy is brilliant- he's unfortunately been confined to the ghetto of "genre fiction" for most of his career, although he's achieved some serious cult status of late. This is his first novel, I think. Either way, it's great. NKVD operatives, lots of gunplay, sex, espionage, food & wine- this book is a cornucopia of WWII spy fiction.

This author understands the power of masculine/feminine polarity which is almost fully lost in the passionless, neutered current western world. She creates a man who is, in my view, nearly a perfect man...against a backdrop of death, torture, sex and transcendent love. It was like she pulled this guy out of my own imagination and painted him in vivid color. I drank in this book slowly and I would turn around and read it again right now...maybe I will.

I could not put this book down. Could have easily read in one sitting if I did not have to work in between. The author captures you from the first chapter and you are begging for more when the last chapter ends. Cannot wait until she publishes her next book.
