Ugh...from the first page the main character annoyed me. There's no way I'm finishing this one.

I had difficulty making sense of this book - I just didn't see the point. It was all darkness, and absolutely no light, despite what the title suggests. I thought at the time that perhaps I'm just not smart enough to read Faulkner. Haven't even attempted to read any of his other books, and am not slightly compelled. Wouldn't have even read this one had it not been that the man I was engaged to was also reading it. Isn't that romance? And somewhat providential.

Very topical in that the Virginia Tech killer is very much like the possessed title character of this book.

** spoiler alert ** Mountolive Have finished the book. The characters in the entire quartet are sensual and erotic but I think this chapter epitomizes the basis of the sexual desire for each other. Justine is a type of Lilith, a succubus. Justine and Nessim's marriage is a sexual passion based on dominance and control; a power based lust. Melissa is the needy character in all the books thus far. The erotism in the books seems to have no basis in traditional ideas of romance. This is what makes the Alexandria Quartet a fascinating series of stories. The internal plot or agenda behind all the seemingly mindless sex is revealed. Also it all unravels for Justine, Nessim, and Narouz. Pursewarden and Melissa are die or are already dead. They are just brought back in Mountolive's memory to fulfill the convoluted plot. As always keeping track of the characters in the series is a challenge within itself. The first two books of the Alexandria Quartet were the foreplay, lovemaking and orgasm, these last two books; Mountolive and Clea are the climax, then the limp, flaccid state in which one reflects. By this time WWII is raging and the remaining characters are either rendered powerless or spent.

I really enjoyed this book. Don Miller brings a fresh view into Christianity in America and what it means to live as Christ would live among others. Plus, some of his stories are downright hilarious! A fairly easy read that can take you deeper if you let it...

This book was interesting. It provided historical details that I didn't have before now and it was good to hear the perspective of a man that lived a historically important life. However, there were times during the book that I disagreed with the author's take that this one man's perspective was that of every man that lived through the war. Despite that, I enjoyed it and appreciated the book. Interesting note: My grandfather--a man of 28 and a father of two (my mother being one) was drafted early in 1945. He went into training in June & July, had a week long furlough, which he completed on Aug. 5th. My grandmother said good-bye to him that day, not sure she'd see him again, as he was being deployed to the S. Pacific. Only one day later the Enola Gay made it's historic flight, ensuring my grandfather could live peacefully for another 50 years.
