This book seems to be rather classic. I have to admit I got tired of hearing the protagonist sing the praises of the prebuscent object of his desires. The style, or perhaps the speed, was just not what I was in the mood for. Unfortunately I was distracted by a busy schedule and was unable to finish it, but perhaps if I have free time later I might try to pick it up again.

** spoiler alert ** Overall I thought the book was good, however the reason I gave it three stars is because there wasn't enough about Callie turning to Cal. The Author spent a great deal of time explaining the lives of Callie/Cal's grandparents and parents, but I feel skipped out on Callie/Cal. I wanted to know more about how Callie/Cal came to know what happened with her grandparents and parents. How he was feeling as he transitioned into his new role. The process of changing just seemed to be skipped over. I may have come into this book thinking it was going to give readers more information about Callie/Cal and less about the minute details of her grandmother's work for the "enemy", and her grandfather's businesses, etc. I wish Mr. Eugenides would have spent more time on the main character. What ever happened to Cal and Julie? What happened after the funeral? How did Cal end up working for the government?.... etc, etc.

As a white from the same period and from a similar smaller town in Alabama, I loved this book. It's multi-dimensional story, description of place in time and characterizations is so very true. It's like looking back at ones on life and saying that I wish I had had this insight at the time. This book was Astonishing in form and content. A MUST READ for any southern girl who where there in the 60's. I look forward to her second book and more to come.
