I wish I could give this 6 stars! LOVED IT! *edited to add* This is a book that I MUST re-read every couple years. It's a compulsion that I need to return to these amazing characters, this beautiful story. Even though I know I can never recapture the magic of the first time I read this book, it remains a favorite.

Trollope's main satirical target in this novel is advertising. It's too heavy handed, particularly from a novelist whose satirical touch could be appealingly light. What saved this novel for me was the competition between Robinson and Brisket, the butcher, for the hand of Maryanne Brown, although that, too, Trollope draws very broadly. Twenty years or so after reading this, I still chuckle over Robinson's excoriation of the more prosperous Brisket, when he feared Brisket was prevailing with Maryanne: "Let him revel in his shambles!"

Inspirational for those who are seeking a Christian experience. The logic employed as proof of God's presence is subject to criticism, however.

In 1919, my Dad was about the same age as the book’s main character, Charlie Krueger. Having grown up not too far from Eastern North Dakota, and having heard of steam engines, threshing crews, and motorcycles in the past, I found the setting for this story authentic and interesting. This is a coming of age story for Charlie Krueger, if he can manage to escape the murderer who wants to shut him up. At first the crime part of the story seems simplistic, but it develops in interesting ways as more nasty people are added to the mix. There are also good, if unconventional, people who befriend Charlie. It is amusing to visualize large, slow moving machines trying to get away and hide on the flat, open prairies of North Dakota. Then there is the final chase scene that goes on for hours along the straight, flat roads in the dark, in the snow. There is a reason and there is a resolution.

I read this book in a single sitting. It was that good.

Eh, okay, it is pretty stupid. Not a self-help book, though it sounds like one. It has spawned an excellent phenomenon of boys I adore rendering some of the caricatures drawn by this silly little tome: Jasper is the crystal meth boyfriend; Luke the insufferable bore. So it is worth a laugh if you have a creative bone in your body and a room full of former theatre nerds.

Fay Weldon uses the conventions of romance novels to challenge and debunk the genre. Funny and wise.

this book was amazing! it was interesting to see how everything seemed to play out and how she made this choice for one reason and then desides against it and then makes the exact thing that she doesn't want to happen happen! it's just interesting to see everyone's feelings and situations make everything seem to go wrong but in a way right. and then she has to explain everything even though she loves him and she doesn't want to and it's just so cool! but you end up not liking shay in the end but then again it's not really her fault. my recommendations to one and all.
