A well written collection of essays, flowed extremely well. Thoughtful, hilarious, and the author is not afraid to laugh at himself. Is able even as an urbane, New Yorker to make poignant, sad and funny observations at today's extent of America's materialistic mantra. Was sad to see this one go, wished it could have gone on longer. But oh well, now I can pick up Fraud, his first collection of essays to reminisce. I cannot believe everybody's complaint about Rakoff is that he uses too many "big words," maybe he hits a little too close to home for some?

The setting, Berlin right after the fall of the Third Reich, is excellent for a noir -- the devastated landscape of the city, queasy moral ambiguities both occupier (black market exploiters/American officials who want to sweep the Nazi associations of Germans they need, like scientists, under the rug) and occupied (how involved in/how much did surviving German citizens know/were involved in the Nazi atrocities?). Kanon depicts this complex situation and the people enmeshed in with excellent detail. Unfortunately, the main murder mystery plot of the novel is not as interesting as the background setting/background characters, sort of creaks along, and positively sags in the middle of the book. The last portion of the book picks up the pace and becomes gripping again, but overall the plot hurt the novel. I'm still glad I read it though, especially for the fascinating setting. One last gripe: *** MILD SPOILER WARNING *** ... ... ... I think Jake discovered his lost love too quickly. If he had been following both mysteries for longer, and they ended up leading to the same place, that would have made their connection more believable. As is, when the connection is revealed, it seems only a contrivance for the convenience of the author. BTW haven't seen the movie, but from all I've heard, the book is far better.

I zipped through books 2, 3 and 4 of this series without stopping and they've sort of run together in my mind. A shame, because the escapades of Dr Conway and all his colleagues is great fun, even if we get the same old words chapter after chapter. it's very much like watching a TV soap opera but without the interruption of advertisements.

I hated this book. Everyone else I know loved it, but I found it completely depressing and sort of boring. I didn't really care about any of the characters, and it was full of tragedy without my understanding of any meaning behind the sadness.
